LONDON - A British hacker whose extradition to face charges of accessing nearly 100 U.S. government computers in a quest for UFOs was halted on grounds he might harm himself will not be tried in Britain, the prosecution office said on Friday.

He has been fighting extradition since police arrested him in 2005 and Home Secretary Theresa May blocked his extradition in October because of the high risk he could kill himself. She referred the matter to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to rule if he should be tried at home.
The CPS said on Friday the chances of a conviction were "not high," and cited logistical difficulties in pursuing a case in England and Wales such as bringing over witnesses and evidence from the United States....

A police chief has hit out at cops being forced to answer "bonkers" questions from the public - such as how many werewolves, vampires and zombies have been investigated.

MUFON has had a lot of issues in the last few years, and many of the more public faces of the organization would probably not feel out of place in a Church of Ufology.
However my need to burst out of my shell and finally be able to speak openly with people about all of these strange topics overrode that initial gut reaction I had, so I sought out to join my local MUFON chapter. As I related in a recent post (see Closet Anomalist/Fortean updates!) when I went to the main MUFON website, it offers you links to your local chapters website. So I followed the links to the South Carolina Chapter of MUFON's home page and for just a few minutes I though I had been transported back to 1998. Seriously check it out and see if you disagree. Go on, I'll wait. OK are you back? Can you believe that? I mean I realize that my blog isn't exactly the most Flash or Java heavy site out there, but at least its better than a block of text that apparently hasn't been updated since 1999.
Even after this bit of disillusionment, I still decided to struggle through. I figured that maybe they had just been so busy with meetings and investigations that perhaps they didn't have time to fix up the website or hire some web builder to do it for them. With this in my mind I called both numbers located on the site, neither one returned an answer. It was a sad moment for your friendly neighborhood Closet Anomalist. But it was then that I noticed there was an email address that you could use to contact the State Director! I set about emailing the director, I asked the director if (1) The local MUFON group was still holding meetings, and (2) if so where/when and how could I attend?
Thankfully the director was able to return my email within about 11 hours, which was really prompt and I was very happy about that. Unfortunately however the answer I got wasn't exactly what I was hoping for. Basically she informed me that my local chapter of MUFON is no longer holding meetings and that if I wanted to do anything with MUFON I would have to join the website. Except that is exactly what I didn't want to do. Remember I wanted to actually meet people in meat space in order to discuss these kinds of Fortean topics. Since I didn't have any alternative I signed up for the mailing list, after all I'm not going to pay their membership fee cause I'm cheap, and so I started receiving emails from MUFON.
That brings me back to today, on Monday I received an email from MUFON describing one of the speakers that they would be having at the annual MUFON Symposium. The particular speaker that they had singled was Barbara Lamb. Now Lamb is, evidently, a licensed Psychotherapist who has had 21 years of research in the Ufological field. The gist of her speech is going to be on the 'Alien-Human Hybrid' problem that is facing humanity. Quoting from the actual email "She will describe the methods used to achieve hybridization, how long hybridization has been occurring, the reasons given by the ETs for creating hybrid offspring, and the success rate and failure rate in creating hybrids who could live successfully on earth. She will give examples of ETs genetically modifying human babies in their mothers' wombs, resulting in exceptional children such as Star Kids, Indigo Children, and Crystal Children. She will mention alleged hybrid people who are already living on earth, some of whom she has met."
That pretty much sealed the deal for me right then and there. Having just finished writing an (apparently successful) post about the 'First Church of Ufology', I actually almost threw up when I read the email. This was almost exactly the kind of stuff that I think is wrong with Ufology. I mean here is a group that gives off the veneer of being a respectable scientific organization but they are letting a lady speak about what basically amounts to a part of a belief system. The email reads, at least to me, like something you might find in a New Age magazine. Not that there is anything wrong with that necessarily but I mean come on, Indigo Children, really?
The email basically helped me come to the conclusion that MUFON is not an organization that I necessarily want anything to do with. While it may be good for some people, it is definitely not the organization for me. At this point I seem to be stuck on the Internet as my only outlet for my Fortean shenanigans. I'm not complaining, I have loved doing this blog, and its given me chance to talk to some cool people in the Fortean field. I may have to remain a Closet Anomalist a little while longer, in the mean time of course I will continue blogging here and writing for Binnall of America. When NASA actually makes a comment about a UFO, even if it's just to deny it and give its own explanation, it's big news. When NASA makes two comments about UFOs in one week, it's even bigger news. When NASA admits it doesn't know what one of these unidentified objects is, it's time to sit up, pay attention and see what's going on.

The first UFO is the object orbiting the one-third-mile-wide asteroid BL86 which came close to Earth (745,000 miles away - three times the distance of Earth to the moon) on January 26. Everyone, including NASA, was surprised to see something in orbit around the asteroid. Measuring only 230 feet in diameter, the object appears to be diamond-shaped and, in the first videos released, was stationary rather than spinning. NASA called it a moon but, when that was questioned by many, it issued a second video from a different angle and another explanation:
In the near-Earth population, about 16% of asteroids that are about 655 feet or larger are a binary (the primary asteroid with a smaller asteroid moon orbiting it) or even triple systems (two moons).
Convinced? While that controversy raged on, a second one popped up. Images taken by the Dawn spacecraft of the dwarf planet Ceres released on January 19 show a large, flickering white spot on the surface. (image above) What could it be? Mission director and chief engineer Marc Rayman gave this unusual statement:
Yes, we can confirm that it is something on Ceres that reflects more sunlight, but what that is remains a mystery. We do not know what the white spot is, but it's certainly intriguing. In fact, it makes you want to send a spacecraft there to find out, and of course that is exactly what we are doing! So as Dawn brings Ceres into sharper focus, we will be able to see with exquisite detail what [the white spot] is.
Gee, I wonder what NASA will say if it's a spaceship?
In the meantime, two statements in a week from NASA on UFOs means someone is listening. While we have their attention, what do you think the objects are?

"Just a few days ago, I was interviewed for a radio show that allowed time at the end for listeners to phone in and ask questions regarding various aspects of the UFO phenomenon. One of the questions was along the lines of: 'Will the government, one day, tell us the truth about UFOs, and if not, why not?' It is, of course, a perfectly valid question. As we know - thanks to the Freedom of Information Act and witness testimony - agencies of numerous, worldwide governments most assuredly "have" taken an interest in UFO activity. And for decades, too.
"There is, however, one important issue to take into consideration regarding the above-question. Namely, there is the assumption that just because government agencies have secretly investigated UFO encounters for years, this must mean they have all the answers regarding what is afoot in our skies. But, here's a thought to keep in mind: what if those same agencies actually "don't" have all the answers? In fact, what if they don't have "any" answers?"
Besides visual sightings, cases sometimes have an indirect physical evidence, including many cases studied by the military and various government agencies of different countries. Indirect physical evidence would be data obtained from afar, such as radar contact and photographs. More direct physical evidence involves physical interactions with the environment at close range-Hynek's "close encounter" or Vallee's "Type-I" cases-which include "landing traces," electromagnetic interference, and physiological/biological effects. * Radar contact and tracking, sometimes from multiple sites. These are often considered among the best cases since they usually involve trained military personnel and control tower operators, simultaneous visual sightings, and aircraft intercepts. One such recent example were the mass sightings of large, silent, low-flying black triangles in 1989 and 1990 over Belgium, tracked by multiple NATO radar and jet interceptors, and investigated by Belgium's military (included photographic evidence).[35] Another famous case from 1986 was the JAL 1628 case over Alaska investigated by the FAA.[36] * Photographic evidence, including still photos, movie film, and video, including some in the infrared spectrum (rare). * Recorded visual spectrograms (extremely rare) - (see Spectrometer) * Recorded gravimetric and magnetic disturbances (extremely rare) * Landing physical trace evidence, including ground impressions, burned and/or desiccated soil, burned and broken foliage, magnetic anomalies, increased radiation levels, and metallic traces. See, e.g. Height 611 UFO Incident or the 1964 Lonnie Zamora's Socorro, New Mexico encounter, considered one of the most inexplicable of the USAF Project Blue Book cases). A well-known example from December 1980 was the USAF Rendlesham Forest Incident in England. Another less than 2 weeks later, in January 1981, occurred in Trans-en-Provence and was investigated by GEPAN, then France's official government UFO-investigation agency.[37] Project Blue Book head Edward J. Ruppelt described a classic 1952 CE2 case involving a patch of charred grass roots.[38] Catalogs of several thousand such cases have been compiled, particularly by researcher Ted Phillips.[39][40] * Physiological effects on people and animals including temporary paralysis, skin burns and rashes, corneal burns, and symptoms resembling radiation poisoning, such as the Cash-Landrum incident in 1980. One such case dates back to 1886, a Venezuelan incident reported in Scientific American magazine.[41] * So-called animal/cattle mutilation cases, that some feel are also part of the UFO phenomenon. Such cases can and have been analyzed using forensic science techniques. * Biological effects on plants such as increased or decreased growth, germination effects on seeds, and blown-out stem nodes (usually associated with physical trace cases or crop circles) * Electromagnetic interference (EM) effects, including stalled cars, power black-outs, radio/TV interference, magnetic compass deflections, and aircraft navigation, communication, and engine disruption.[42] A list of over 30 such aircraft EM incidents was compiled by NASA scientist Dr. Richard F. Haines.[43] A famous 1976 military case over Tehran, recorded in CIA and DIA classified documents, resulted in communication losses in multiple aircraft and weapons system failure in an F-4 jet interceptor as it was about to fire a missile on one of the UFOs. This was also a radar/visual case. (Fawcett Good, 318-322, 497-502)[44][45] * Remote radiation detection, some noted in FBI and CIA documents occurring over government nuclear installations at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1950, also reported by Project Blue Book director Ed Ruppelt in his book.[46] * Actual hard physical evidence cases, such as 1957, Ubatuba, Brazil, magnesium fragments analyzed by the Brazilian government and in the Condon Report and by others. The 1964 Socorro/Lonnie Zamora incident also left metal traces, analyzed by NASA. * Misc: Recorded electromagnetic emissions, such as microwaves detected in the well-known 1957 RB-47 surveillance aircraft case, which was also a visual and radar case;[47] polarization rings observed around a UFO by a scientist, explained by Dr. James Harder as intense magnetic fields from the UFO causing the Faraday effect.[48]These various reported physical evidence cases have been studied by various scientist and engineers, both privately and in official governmental studies (such as Project Blue Book, the Condon Committee, and the French GEPAN/SEPRA). A comprehensive scientific review of physical evidence cases was carried out by the 1998 Sturrock UFO panel.[49]Attempts have been made to reverse engineer the possible physics behind UFOs through analysis of both eyewitness reports and the physical evidence. Examples are former NASA and nuclear engineer James McCampbell in his book Ufology online, NACA/NASA engineer Paul R. Hill in his book Unconventional Flying Objects, and German rocketry pioneer Hermann Oberth. Among subjects tackled by McCampbell, Hill, and Oberth was the question of how UFOs can fly at supersonic speeds without creating a sonic boom.
