S y n o p s i s
There have been many UFO cases addressed on various television documentaries throughout the years. Many of these are forgettable, many are biased, and then there are a few that present the facts as they are.
One of the latter was presented by the MUFON organization in October, 2008. The special was carried by the Discovery Channel. Titled "UFOs over Earth," the hour long show addressed an extremely compelling case of UFO sightings, an alien encounter, and possible alien abduction.
On January 8, 2007, this baffling case began in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on the banks of the Cape Fear River.
The main witness in this case is one Chris Bledsoe Sr. Bledsoe, a successful builder and commercial pilot, was well liked and respected in his community. On the day of the strange events, he was fishing with four other men, Donny Ackerman, Gene Robinson, David McDonald. and Chris Bledsoe Jr. The relationship between Bledsoe and the other three men was not addressed fully on the TV program, but Mr. Bledsoe informed me that Ackerman, Robinson, and McDonald worked for him as framing subcontractors, and had just finished a large beach home and gotten paid the day of the encounter.
They invited Chris Sr. and Jr. to go fishing with them. Bledsoe Sr. said, "Why not?" as his wife and three other children were out of town that day. They all rode to the fishing spot in Bledsoe's four door pickup truck because it was a four-wheel drive, and could maneuver in the muddy banks of the river.
Bledsoe took a walk away from the fishing spot, and spotted three UFOs. He returned to the fishing spot, and pointed out the objects to the other three men. They were frightened by the UFOs, and quickly left the river, seeing the objects again. After Bledsoe arrived home, and went out into his backyard to find out why his dogs were barking. He followed them into the woods, and saw an alien being.
After the basic details of Bledsoe's encounter were taken by MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) investigators, the UFO group was anxious to gather testimony from Bledsoe's fishing buddies, but they had trouble locating the three for a time.
This, by no means, lessens the validity of their eyewitness accounts. Rating the authenticity of a UFO sighting as to the social status of a witness was employed by Project Blue Book in the 1960s, and was eventually found to be faulty. There is no evidence at this time to suggest that they made up their stories, or conspired to create a hoax. If they did, they did a remarkable job. All of the accounts given by the three regarding the sighting of the three unknown flying objects were almost identical.

Christopher Bledsoe is a commercial pilot, and from 1986 to 2005 owned an award winning construction business in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was nominated as Businessman of the Year in 2003 by the National Republican Congressional Committee and was invited to President George Bush's inauguration. He is a rescue scuba diver and, prior to his "experience," was a noted hunter on record as having killed one of the largest bears in North Carolina.
In January 2007, Chris, his son Chris Jr. and three of of his subcontractors, Donny Ackerman, Gene Robinson, and David McDonald witnessed a series of terrifying sightings of unexplained phenomena. They were investigated by the organization MUFON and a scientist from the Space Industry.
Their experience was featured on the Discovery Channel's 2008 series UFOs Over Earth: The Fayetteville Incident.
Chris currently lives in North Carolina, with his wife Yvonne and their four children. He owns chickens and dogs and keeps a large garden. He loves backpacking and nature. Since his experience Chris has given up the sport of hunting.

I related a few weeks back how I was trying to stop being so much of a Closet Anomalist. Aside from my continued blogging here at Forteania, the easiest way I felt that I could really 'come out' so to speak was by joining a Fortean group. The one that immediately sprang to my mind, as I'm sure it does to other's as well, was MUFON. The Mutual UFO Network is arguably one of the best know Ufological groups in the US, if not in the world. I have to be honest though as soon as I thought about MUFON I almost immediately discarded the idea. MUFON has had a lot of issues in the last few years, and many of the more public faces of the organization would probably not feel out of place in a Church of Ufology.
However my need to burst out of my shell and finally be able to speak openly with people about all of these strange topics overrode that initial gut reaction I had, so I sought out to join my local MUFON chapter. As I related in a recent post (see Closet Anomalist/Fortean updates!) when I went to the main MUFON website, it offers you links to your local chapters website. So I followed the links to the South Carolina Chapter of MUFON's home page and for just a few minutes I though I had been transported back to 1998. Seriously check it out and see if you disagree. Go on, I'll wait. OK are you back? Can you believe that? I mean I realize that my blog isn't exactly the most Flash or Java heavy site out there, but at least its better than a block of text that apparently hasn't been updated since 1999.
Even after this bit of disillusionment, I still decided to struggle through. I figured that maybe they had just been so busy with meetings and investigations that perhaps they didn't have time to fix up the website or hire some web builder to do it for them. With this in my mind I called both numbers located on the site, neither one returned an answer. It was a sad moment for your friendly neighborhood Closet Anomalist. But it was then that I noticed there was an email address that you could use to contact the State Director! I set about emailing the director, I asked the director if (1) The local MUFON group was still holding meetings, and (2) if so where/when and how could I attend?
Thankfully the director was able to return my email within about 11 hours, which was really prompt and I was very happy about that. Unfortunately however the answer I got wasn't exactly what I was hoping for. Basically she informed me that my local chapter of MUFON is no longer holding meetings and that if I wanted to do anything with MUFON I would have to join the website. Except that is exactly what I didn't want to do. Remember I wanted to actually meet people in meat space in order to discuss these kinds of Fortean topics. Since I didn't have any alternative I signed up for the mailing list, after all I'm not going to pay their membership fee cause I'm cheap, and so I started receiving emails from MUFON.
That brings me back to today, on Monday I received an email from MUFON describing one of the speakers that they would be having at the annual MUFON Symposium. The particular speaker that they had singled was Barbara Lamb. Now Lamb is, evidently, a licensed Psychotherapist who has had 21 years of research in the Ufological field. The gist of her speech is going to be on the 'Alien-Human Hybrid' problem that is facing humanity. Quoting from the actual email "She will describe the methods used to achieve hybridization, how long hybridization has been occurring, the reasons given by the ETs for creating hybrid offspring, and the success rate and failure rate in creating hybrids who could live successfully on earth. She will give examples of ETs genetically modifying human babies in their mothers' wombs, resulting in exceptional children such as Star Kids, Indigo Children, and Crystal Children. She will mention alleged hybrid people who are already living on earth, some of whom she has met."
That pretty much sealed the deal for me right then and there. Having just finished writing an (apparently successful) post about the 'First Church of Ufology', I actually almost threw up when I read the email. This was almost exactly the kind of stuff that I think is wrong with Ufology. I mean here is a group that gives off the veneer of being a respectable scientific organization but they are letting a lady speak about what basically amounts to a part of a belief system. The email reads, at least to me, like something you might find in a New Age magazine. Not that there is anything wrong with that necessarily but I mean come on, Indigo Children, really?
The email basically helped me come to the conclusion that MUFON is not an organization that I necessarily want anything to do with. While it may be good for some people, it is definitely not the organization for me. At this point I seem to be stuck on the Internet as my only outlet for my Fortean shenanigans. I'm not complaining, I have loved doing this blog, and its given me chance to talk to some cool people in the Fortean field. I may have to remain a Closet Anomalist a little while longer, in the mean time of course I will continue blogging here and writing for Binnall of America. As I mentioned in yesterday's post, the Certified MUFON Field Investigator exam covers five main categories, and even though it's an open-book exam and the exam is actually in the book, I still think it's important to prepare. Do I meet the five standards? Will I be the best Certified MUFON Field Investigator I can be?
The very first item is perhaps the most difficult, because it is the most important:
"o INVESTIGATIVE ETHICS. Most importantly, the Trainee must understand and adhere to the tenet of anonymity (withholding witness identifiers from persons who are not part of the UFO report investigation or its evaluation within MUFON)."
I think I'm already meeting this standard quite nicely. If you've read this blog much, you'll know that I regularly redact the names of people I interview and quote, so as to maintain their anonymity and shield them from ridicule. For instance, I will always refer to my wife Monica as "my wife Mxxxxx," because she really doesn't want to be mentioned here by name and I fully respect that.
Is it ethical to do the ethical thing only because I think it's funny? I think that may actually elevate me to a level of meta-ethicalness that few if any UFO Field Investigators have ever reached, or ever hope to. What makes it even better is that several people have mentioned to me that they quite enjoy seeing their names redacted in my blog, so not only do my investigative ethics serve a higher purpose, they make the people I quote feel good about their redacted selves. I think I am really opening up new vistas in ethicalness, and I hope I will be recognized for my efforts someday.
I don't stop at redacting names, though. In order to fully respect the anonymity of the witnesses I interview, I always make a deliberate effort to mentally pixilate their faces when I interview them. For example, if you and I were both talking to the same person, you would see this:

Hence, I would get more out of the person than you would. Which is why I am about to become a Certified MUFON Field Investigator, and you are not. Unless you're keeping something from me.

A UFO SIGHTING witness from the west-central San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles (CA) reported having photographed a strange craft with the L.A.P.D. helicopter while working on some practice shots.

"I decided to take a picture of the helicopter with the blades clearly visible," the witness writes in this MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) report.
"I had set the camera to a shutter speed of 1/250sec in an attempt to catch to rotors of the L.A.P.D. helicopter," he writes. But the photographer did not have the chance to look closely at his photo until December last year. It was then that he caught the strange object in the frame.
"I blew up the picture, and could not believe at what I was looking at," the report continues. He explains in his MUFON report that he is a bird watcher, but the object he saw did not look like a bird at all.

He reckons it could have been flying fast. "The only other objects with motion blur are the three blades. I also do not believe that [strange object] is a toy because it would be flying very close to the police helicopter. Whatever this object is, it was in my opinion, flying at a high rate of speed, fast enough that it is not visible to one's eyes."
The witness uploaded to MUFON a 2.70MB (4912 x 3264 pixels) photo. The photo here has been cropped for a closer look at the helicopter. The witness, who reported the sighting on Jan. 18, did not leave his name on the MUFON Web site.

The witness reported seeing lights in the sky in a rural area near Santa Clara, California, in October of 1969 (possibly 1968). A local group that investigates UFO close encounters said it's getting more reports of UFOs in our area and more interest in the organization.
When you see reports about UFOs on the internet, it's hard to separate fact from fiction. But, that's exactly what a group of UFO investigators in Kansas City is working to do.
On May 31, witnesses saw two unidentified objects near the UMKC campus. A man reported it to MUFON, Mutual UFO Network, and gave investigators a drawing of what he saw.
"He grew up on military bases and couldn't identify it at all," said Margie Kay, Director of KC MUFON.
Kay said sightings like the one at UMKC are on the rise since the start of the year. They used to get one or two sightings a month. Now, it's one or two a day.
"It's keeping us all too busy. Yes. At one point a couple of months ago I received 11 reports on the same day," said Kay.
Kay is also noticing a lot more chatter on websites. One message board used to get about 12 posts a month a couple of years ago, in January 2009, it received 129 messages.

When Dr. Haines saw an opportunity for cooperation between Russian and U.S. ufologists and formed the JOINT USA-CIS AERIAL ANOMALY FEDERATION, MUFON pledged support this new venture. (US) Sixty volumes of "meticulous UFO research over 30 years" by the late Ufologist Leonard H. Stringfield were donated to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), according to an August 3, 2012, announcement by MUFON Executive Director David MacDonald who spoke at the organization's annual symposium.
The news of Stringfield's work surfacing and in MUFON's hands now had been kept secret prior to the 8 p.m. announcement as one of two "blockbuster UFO discoveries" that the group was to make at the Cincinnati event. A second briefing will be made about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 5.
Stringfield (1920-1994) was an American ufologist who worked with government and private agencies to track UFO reports and had a special interest in reports of crashed objects.
MUFON Pennsylvania State Director John Ventre, reacting by telephone just minutes after the announcement, said MacDonald touched on just some of the written evidence compiled by Stringfield.
"In those 60 volumes we have government interference, the FBI and CIA stopping the ufologists at any cost," Ventre said. "He names Donald Rumbsfeld and President Ford as being briefed on UFOs by J. Allen Hynek. He talks about UFO investigators being beaten or receiving death threats. He names heads of state that knew. He even has actor Jackie Gleason's contact information in there. There is a lot of explosive information in there."
Media stories from the past suggested that President Nixon had shown Gleason an actual alien body. Ventre said that MUFON plans to digitize the files and make them available to researchers in the future.
The subject of UFOs first caught Stringfield's attention on August 28, 1945, just three days before the end of WWII, when he had his own encounter as an Army Air Force Intelligence Officer en route to Tokyo with 12 other specialists from the Fifth Air Force.
The group was approaching Iwo Jima at 10,000 feet with a sunlit sky.
"I was shocked to see three teardrop-shaped objects from my starboard-side window," Stringfield wrote. "They were brilliantly white, like burning magnesium, and closing in on a parallel course to our C-46. Suddenly our left engine feathered, and I was later to learn that the magnetic navigation-instrument needles went wild. As the C-46 lost altitude, with oil spurting from the troubled engine, the pilot sounded an alert; crew and passengers were told to prepare for a ditch! I do not recall my thoughts or actions during the next, horrifying moments, but my last glimpse of the three bogies placed them about 20 degrees above the level of our transport. Flying in the same, tight formation, they faded into a cloud bank. Instantly our craft's engine revved up, and we picked up altitude and flew a steady course to land safely at Iwo Jima."
Stringfield walked away from the event frightened about what he had seen, and later heard independent reports from other witnesses that caused him to take a more serious look at UFOs.
He created Civilian Research, Interplanetary Flying Objects (CRIFO) and published the monthly newsletter, ORBIT. The newsletter caught the media's attention and soon his paid subscribers swelled to 2,500, becoming the world's largest civilian UFO research group of its day.
Then on September 9, 1955, the Air Defense Command (ADC), Columbus, OH, called on him for cooperation in passing along current UFO reports. The Ground Observer Corps (GOC) in southwestern Ohio was asked to call Stringfield with UFO activity and he was asked to call the ADC to report the better sightings.
In 1957, Stringfield became the public relations adviser for the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP), a new civilian UFO reporting group operated by Donald Keyhoe - a position he held until 1972.
In the 1970s he began collecting witness accounts of crashed UFOs that included accounts of alien bodies. He went on to publish seven reports on this material until his death in 1994. He served as director of public relations and as a board member for MUFON. He was a regional director for the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies. He was an advisor to Grenada Prime Minister Sir Eric Gairy during efforts to establish a UFO research agency within the United Nations.
He published his first UFO book," Inside Saucer Post 3-0 Blue" in 1957. Other books followed. His most famous, "Situation Red: The UFO Siege" was published in 1977 and subsequently translated into several languages. Later, he published seven reports on UFO Crash/Retrievals. The latest, "Status Report VII: Search for Proof in a Hall of Mirrors," was published in February 1994.
In his private life, Stringfield worked for DuBois Chemicals, a division of Chemed Corporation, Cincinnati. He died on December 18, 1994, in his sleep one day after his 74th birthday after a long battle with lung cancer.
