Last night, 12/25/14, there were 5 of us sitting outside in our hot tub looking at the stars and saw a series of large orange fireballs fly in formation over the southern part of Charlotte.
They flew in straight lines with a number of them flying in a V formation. This went on for at least 10 minutes. The amazing part, which I have not seen reported before, is they would suddenly go dark and drop something out of them and then start glowing bright orange again.
The items dropped seemed to be like parachutes that floated to the ground. We didn't have a camera near the hot tub and didn't want to go look for what was dropped.
We don't think they were Chinese lanterns because they flew at a constant speed, constant height, were in formations and were much larger than Chinese lanterns we are aware of.
They also weren't planes or drones because they clearly had a bright orange glow like they were on fire. We thought maybe they were special skydiving planes and the items dropped were actually nighttime skydivers.
The problem is they didn't land in the same location and did not drop at the same time. I reported this to the local newspaper, but so far have heard nothing in return.
Anyway, we were all fascinated by it.

The 200-per-year space rockl impact rate for Mars was based on a portion of the 248 new Martian craters that have been identified in the past decade using images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a NASA spacecraft that has been circling the Red Planet since 2006.
"It's exciting to find these new craters right after they form," study researcher Ingrid Daubar of the University of Arizona, Tucson, said in a statement. "It reminds you Mars is an active planet, and we can study processes that are happening today."

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera snapped amazingly detailed pictures of the fresh craters at sites where before-and-after images had been taken by the orbiter's wider-view Context Camera and cameras on other orbiters studying the Red Planet, scientists said.
The same method could be used to estimate the age of other recent features on the planet, including some that may be the result of Martian climate change.
The new calculation of Mars' cratering rate dwarfs earlier estimates.
Based on studies of lunar craters and moon rocks collected by NASA's Apollo astronauts, scientists had calculated that there were just three to 10 yearly impacts on Mars.
"Mars now has the best-known current rate of cratering in the solar system," said HiRISE principal investigator Alfred McEwen.

On the science fiction side there was Tom Kirkbride, who is becoming a regular feature at the Festival. He is the author of the Gamadin books that he says evolved from a love of science fiction and his desire to write a "character" driven adventure for young adults. It is a series for boys that will appeal to girls, at least according to the promotional displays around Kirkbride.Sharon King also writes science fiction for a younger crowd. Her latest book is "Oops was Bullied?" This is the story of a tiny alien named Oops and the Earth girl who befriends her. King said that her ideas were inspired by an earlier visit to the Roswell area.At the other end of the spectrum, there were those who are big with the UFO crowd and who have made the rounds at various UFO functions. Most popular of those Travis Walton 2012who are involved with alien abduction was Travis Walton. I was told that his books are difficult to keep stocked in the Museum's bookstore because of his popularity. Walton's tale of being hit by a beam of light from an alien craft and his captivity for five days seems to resonate with the crowd. In the times I've met him, he has always seemed to be somewhat understated, meaning I guess, a little reserved or quiet but adamant about what he had seen and what he had experienced.The interesting thing here is that those who were with him that night have remained steadfast in their support of their story and their observations which certainly suggest Walton had undergone a truly strange experience. After so many years, had this been a hoax, you would have expected some cracks in the story. The best that can be said is that Steve Pierce told Philip Klass it was a hoax, but that whole episode was covered last year in my interview with Pierce.Kathleen Marden, Betty Hill's niece, was there as well.
