Some of the more familiar entries include Friede (from Die Frau Au Mond), Buck Rogers, the TinTin rocket, Gerry Andersons' Thunderbirds, ships from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Josie's Spaceship (from Josie and the Pussycats), and the Myst Island Rocket from the video game. There are even several entries by one G. Harry Stine, who also was also a sci-fi author! The one place this book let me down was that it didn't have plans for the Fireball XL-5, which is one of my favorite subjects. This omission was due to publishing deadlines and there is teaser about a future Volume 2."THE REAL STUFF"This section is dedicated to spacecraft from the late 1950's, 1960's and 1990's that never were realized in hardware. These include the X-20, NASA 6 F-1, Project Pluto, Manned Orbiting Laboratory, Lockheed-Martin's VentureStar, Kistler's K-1, Kelly's Astroliner, Pioneer's Pathfinder, and the Rotary Rocket Roton. One thing to note is that in earlier sections, the primary designer, author, or producer could be identified. By the 1950's, the work of rocket science was now dominated by the government and/or private companies with "armies of technical people". I would have liked to seen this section be a bit thicker. I hope that Volume 2 will include a section on the X-Prize contestants - at least those who don't eventually make it into space.APPENDICIESAppendix A, entitled "The Atomic Powered Spaceship: Yesterday's Dream, Spaceflight's Future?" is a paper on interplanetary space travel. Although the title sounds somewhat specific, this covers a wide range of topics and presents the results of a bit of number crunching buy the author. This paper includes: challenges in manned interplanetary space flight; a tutorial on how rockets work; the human factors of space flight; a methodology for comparing engine/propulsion options; a subsequent analysis of a wide variety of engines, from chemical to matter/anti-matter; the potential destinations within our solar system; and a description of what it will take to get to those destinations. Most of this paper is not very detailed or highly technical and should be of interest to those of our hobby.Appendix B. The Tribute to G. Harry is part biography and part a personal memoir by the author. The plans vary in detail, but should be sufficient for a scratch builder to replicate the four craft: Luna from Destination Moon, Thunderbirds 1 and 3, and the X-20 Dyna Soar/Titan IIIE. These plans were taken from 3rd parties and the proper credit is given.CONCLUSIONI am amazed at the quality and amount of material covered in this book. The book exceeded my expectations and even if I don't build a single model from this book, it will provide continuous inspiration for my future modeling activities. I would have liked to see the Fireball XL-5 and more 'real' spacecraft described, so I offer this a suggestion for a future Volume 2.I want to thank Jack Hagerty of ARA Press for the signed copy that he so generously donated to the EMRR NASROC and MonsterROC photo contest. This 330 page hard-cover book features detailed information on famous flying saucers depicted on the big screen, television and print, including:* The Day the Earth Stood Still* War of the Worlds* This Island Earth* Forbidden Planet* Earth vs. The Flying Saucers* Lost in Space* The Invaders* plus some others.CONTENTSThe book can be viewed as an adjunct to "The Spaceship Handbook", which conspicuously omitted saucers. In his intro, Jack notes that these saucers don't exactly fit there, as they haven't contributed to the history of the spacecraft. But then, neither do items like the Josie's Spaceship (from Josie and the Pussycats), which was featured in "The Handbook". I for one think that they do have their place, even if only in my imagination, since the real world versions haven't panned out (for example, see my post on the Pye Wacket). Be that as it may, I think saucers are cool and am happy Jack and Jon gave us this book. (BTW, I liked Josie's Spaceship.)The presentation is similar to that in "The Handbook", including: a background section that sets the historical context; a summary of the story; a description of the subject vehicle including a detailed, dimensioned drawings; background on where the authors got their data; and, finally, an epilogue with the author's comments. The whole thing is packed with photos. New to this work, many of the drawings also provide interior details. There are some modeler's notes, but these are pretty much limited to the kits that have been produced.In his forward, Dr. Phil "Bad Astronomer" Plait says the book is a biography of these shows. It is that and more. To present that biography, the authors first delve into the history and sociology behind the UFO craze, which continues to this day. The saucers in the book were motivated by that phenomenon and undoubtedly did their part to fuel it on. I actually found this to be one of the more interesting aspects of the book. Note that this book is about flying saucers (known entities created by our imaginations) and not UFO's (unknown entities that may really exist, but whose origin is in dispute).The historical and story summaries were also interesting. One of the cool things was to see how these classics influenced later sci-fi works. There is even an occasional discussion about the real science behind the fictitious technology. I now know what a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is. And how much energy would be released if the strong force holding your atoms together was abruptly released. Cool, huh? It was also really neat to get a recap of features like I love like The Day the Earth Stood Still and Lost is Space. I'd like to see them again now that I have read the book.While the saucer descriptions and diagrams were the main thing I originally wanted from the book, they actually were a small part of the whole. There is not much material available on the saucers and what there is is usually inconsistent. The authors performed a lot of photogrammetry and often had to resort to supposition, and extrapolation. It's clear they really did their homework to dig out details about these ships. The results are the most detailed plans available on these saucers. (Actually, that statement may have some supposition on my part too.)The 'archeological' reports and and epilogues were of mixed interest to me. In general, the detailed analysis of the the interiors of these spacecraft were a bit much. The main benefit of this detail is twofold. First, detailed sci-fi modelers will understand what they are modeling second, scale modelers in general will understand how develop plans from photographic sources. The epilogues also went into more detail on the movies influence, both in terms of the story lines as well as the physical props.CONCLUSION:I found the book interesting, but mainly not in ways I had expected. I think that it will appeal mostly to sci-fi buffs and fans of the subject shows. The drawings will be useful to sci-fi modelers but many can be used for flying models as well. However, since ours fly upward instead of sideways, the non-symmetrical ones would be problematic. But if you want scale points for your saucer, the book will be very useful.While I really liked the read, this will have less influence on my building the "The Spaceship Handbook" and the latter is a better buy for the sport rocketeer. Although the Atomic Testing Museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian, it isn't a subsidiary. And when it comes to UFOs, like most reasonably intelligent people, the retired Navy commander would prefer an independent inquiry to a laughably outdated government fact sheet."Well it is a little risky, because we've got something of a reputation to uphold," says Palmer, whose remarkable Museum in Las Vegas routinely displays loaner material from the Smithsonian. "But I feel strongly that the (UFO) story has not been covered properly, and that not a lot of true science or analytical thought has gone into it."True enough. Ergo, on Sept. 22 in Las Vegas, Palmer is convening five well-vetted panelists - John Alexander, Charles Halt, Nick Pope, Bob Friend and Bill Coleman - for the provocative "Secrets Revealed" discussion. Question: Considering how the collective experiences of these old hands have been bouncing around in the public domain forever, what can they offer that we don't already know?Plenty, insists Palmer. For instance, Bill Coleman, the retired Air Force colonel and former Project Blue Book mouthpiece, insists he's got a "blockbuster" up his sleeve. "I'm 89. I won't be around much longer," Coleman says from his home in Indian Harbour Beach. He says he's resisted multiple third-party efforts to pry it out of him before said date.Coleman, who once chased a daylight disc in the summer of 1955, only to discover his report had unaccountably vanished from the Blue Book archives, co-produced the "Project UFO" series for NBC in 1978-79. Until several years ago, he was working on a related memoir, but was unable to finish it. But he shared his story with Merv Griffin in the Seventies, as well as on the nationally-televised "UFO Coverup Live" in 1988.Coleman should fit right in at the Atomic Testing Museum, dedicated to showcasing artifacts from one of the most extraordinarily weird epochs in American history. THE PROBLEM, AS I NOTE IN BOTH THE ABOVE-BOOKS, IS THAT THE UK IS SIMPLY NOT LARGE ENOUGH TO HIDE, OR FEED, ENTIRE COLONIES OF LARGE, MARAUDING, APE-LIKE CREATURES, OR PRIMITIVE, HAIR-COVERED HUMANOIDS. When it comes to trying to ascertain the true nature of the British Bigfoot and "wild man" encounters - which is a deeply fraught and difficult task at the very best of times - the theories are as wide and varied as they are controversial and thought-provoking. But, without doubt, one of the most engaging of all scenarios to explain this undeniably nationwide, ancient conundrum comes from friend and fellow creature-seeker Neil Arnold, whose views on the matter I secured in a January 2012 interview
Having extensively investigated such reports, Neil says: "I've always wondered what type of manifestation these U.K. 'wild men' could be. In the autumn of 2011 a psychic lady who I know as a friend and who I trust - I don't often have any interests in psychics - accompanied me to Blue Bell Hill, which is a very haunted village in Kent, a few miles short of the town of Maidstone. I knew of several obscure 'man-beast' reports in the area which she knew nothing about.
"I took her to one particular spot, near some ancient stones, hoping she'd pick up a ghostly presence and she said she felt nothing whatsoever, but she did state quite categorically that a few years previous, around 2003 she'd had a bizarre encounter in the area one night."
The story told to Neil goes like this: "She had visited Kit's Coty House [a set of stone, Neolithic burial chambers] with a group of fellow psychics. Her friends were over on one side of the field which harbours the stones and she was in another area when she noticed someone walking towards her a few hundred yards away. The figure seemed to be striding rather aggressively and was coming from the direction of a thicket which runs alongside the field."
This was no normal human of modern-day standards, however, as Neil's following words make acutely and abundantly clear: "The woman, whose name is Corriene, stated that from a distance the figure appeared huge in build and covered in hair and she sensed it was not 'real' but gave off an air of malevolence. The figure marched towards her and she could see it had long hair and a beard, covering most of its face.
"The hulking figure was taller than six feet and appeared to have a loin cloth around its waist and furred boots. No-one else saw this figure, but I was intrigued as I knew that in the past several witnesses had come forward to say they'd seen similar figures in woods within miles of Blue Bell Hill."
It was this encounter that set Neil on a decidedly intriguing train of thought: "I began to wonder if people had seen, from a distance, some type of ghostly primitive man - long hair, bearded, muscular, animal fur around the waist - who, from several hundred yards away, or in ill light, may have looked as if he was covered in hair. Blue Bell Hill and much of Kent is steeped in history - so maybe people were seeing some type of Neolithic hunter.
"Corriene was intrigued by what I said and then, rather startled, mentioned that on another occasion whilst in the area of the stones she'd seen several of these people who she felt were not aggressive, and although armed with spears were simply guarding the area and stooping low in the bushes, curious as to what they were seeing."
Significantly, this case did not stand alone, as Neil told me: "In 1974 a woman named Maureen - who I became very close friends with after working with her ten years ago - was with her boyfriend in woods off a close named Sherwood Avenue, in Walderslade, which, as the crow flies, is only a couple of miles short of Blue Bell Hill. Her boyfriend was tending to the fire when Maureen felt as if she was being watched.
"She turned slowly and to her amazement saw a massive figure, standing over seven feet tall, seemingly covered in hair, just a few yards away. The figure had bright eyes which blinked. The figure seemed to crouch down behind the bushes very slowly, and Maureen asked her boyfriend if they could leave the area, and they did. Maureen never told her boyfriend what she'd seen. They eventually married and were together for many years. In fact, she never told anyone about what she'd seen until she realized what I was interested in."
Neil concludes: "I believe Maureen one hundred per cent, but I strongly believe this figure was some type of elemental [or] spirit. I also believe this figure could have been a Neolithic type of hunter."
Could some of the weirder British wild man and hair-covered humanoid stories have their origins in the very sort of fashion that Neil Arnold suggests? Having investigated many such UK-based stories, nearly all of which are saturated in paranormal weirdness, I say: "don't bet against it"

Ich habe Hip-Hop geh"ort, viel Sport gemacht (Martial Arts) mit Freunden Partys gefeiert und nebenbei am Gymnasium mein Abitur gemacht. Also irgendwie ein ganz normaler Jugendlicher der cool sein wollte.

Jetzt wurde ich panisch da ich bewusst merkte das etwas nicht stimmen konnte (falsches Erwachen und Schlafparalyse waren mir zu dieser Zeit schon Begriffe) und wollte zu meiner Mutter ins Zimmer laufen (mit 17 Jahren, als vermeintlich cooler Typ?) das war schon ein seltsames Gef"uhl.
Aber es kommt noch besser. Um zum Zimmer meiner Mutter zu gelangen musste ich durch unseren Flur, da ihr Zimmer am anderen Ende der Wohnung lag. Als ich mein Zimmer verlassen wollte, nahm ich einen starken Verwesungsgestank im Flur wahr und sah ein riesiges Chewbacca "ahnliches Wesen am Ende des Flures, das mich fixierte und ein lautes Ger"ausch von sich gab.
Die Angst die ich empfand war unbeschreiblich, aber nicht weil ich Angst vor Monstern hatte, es war eher wie eine hervorgerufene K"orperreaktion "uber ich die ich selbst im vermeintlichen Traum keine Kontrolle hatte. Ich bin zur"uck in mein Zimmer und war verzweifelt.
Nur um wieder "aufzuwachen" diesmal bei vollem Bewusstsein aber ich konnte mich nicht bewegen und war wie versteinert. Dabei habe ich unglaublich geschwitzt. Nach gef"uhlten Minuten in diesem paralysierten Zustand bin ich aus dieser Starre erwacht, und war wirklich wach.
Alles war normal aber ich war komplett durchgeschwitzt. Auch als ich zum Zimmer meiner Mutter gegangen bin und hineingeschaut haben war alles normal. Damals erkl"arte ich mir den Vorfall mit einer Schlafparalyse, luzidem Tr"aumen und falschem Erwachen.
Dies sind ja g"angige Dinge in der Psychologie und Schlafforschung. Was ich damals allerdings heftig fand ist das ich in einer Nacht drei mal "aufgewacht" bin. Es war der bisher schlimmste "Alptraum" meines Lebens.
Wie schon geschrieben, hatte ich damals weder mit Aliens noch mit Bigfoot irgendetwas zu tun. Ich hatte mich einfach nicht damit besch"aftigt, und hatte wie viele in dem Alter ganz andere Gedankeng"ange und Sorgen.
Ich bin mir bei meinem heutigen Wissensstand nicht mehr so sicher ob es sich nur um eine einfache Schlafparalyse gehandelt hat. Retrospektive waren die zwei Gestalten Greys sehr "ahnlich, nur mit mit anderen Gesichtern, und ich kann das haarige Wesen definitiv als Bigfoot einstufen.

When it was at its closest point to us we could both clearly see its green, blue, red and white lights pulsating and definitely saw it spinning. You can hear me say it in the video. After circling a couple of times it headed back Northwest out of our sight. I couldnt decide if it was something military or something "not of this world". I have been very interested in unexplained phenomenon for many years, so I have been excited and curious to find out what it is we actually witnessed, and if anyone else witnessed it. I was completely sober, unlike many of the people there at the concert, so my vision and perception of what I saw was definitely clear.
