For the second year in a row, I find myself at the International UFO Congress near Phoenix, Arizona. Last year I wrote a detailed five-part account of the conference. I told myself I wouldnt write as much this year, but it looks like this resolution may be broken.
When I arrived Tuesday evening, February 26, I ran into Lee Speigel in the restaurant, the weird news reporter for AOL/Huffington post, who is the Host of this Conference, and who I have known for years. I would call Speigel a "skeptical believer," meaning that while he thinks some UFO cases may be beyond our present knowledge, he realizes that the great majority of UFO claims are frankly not worth much. Speigel was with Ben Hansen of Fact or Faked on the SyFy Channel, who was the first speaker Wednesday morning, and who takes a similar position.
The next morning, after Speigels introduction, Ben Hansen spoke on "Profiling the Hoaxers." He explained that his background in law enforcement prepares him well for forensic evidence of UFO and other paranormal evidence. He describes himself as neither a believer or skeptic, but a "verifier." He explains that hoaxes abound in UFOlogy, and that there can be big money in making bogus ET claims, although he will not name any names. He set forth the following "Hoaxer Subtypes," based on his experience in law enforcement and with paranormal claims:
1. Clinical Con Artist. Charismatic, lacks conscience. Claims of persecution by federal agencies - a red flag, there is so much red tape for intelligence actions that these claims are not at all credible. Some of these people have Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The mentally disordered tend to gravitate to "our field," i.e. UFOlogy.
2. Legendizers, seeking fame and/or financial gain. May have had a legitimate experience, but you can only tell the same story so many times, so they add more and more excitement each time it is told.
3. Commercial Campaigners. Publicity stunts. They are not in it for the long-haul, the hoax usually only lasts a few weeks. This damages the credibility of the UFO field, it makes people dismiss legitimate cases.
4. Self-amused pranksters. Motivated by the challenge of pulling it off.
5. Disinformation agents, the rarest type. The government changed its story on Roswell, repeatedly. The 1956 documentary movie UFO was part of a debunking contingency plan. (This category sounds dubious to me).

This report covers a fascinating daylight sighting of what was clearly a Flying Triangle craft, which appeared to have even directly interacted with people in close proximity to the witness. The same craft was apparently also seen soon afterwards by two police officers who reported their sighting, but this is the first time that this particular sighting has been documented.
Sighting Details
The incident took place on a Sunday in late summer 2000. Anthony (name changed for privacy reasons) was out with his family in his parents car. He was sitting on the back seat with his wife and child, his mother was in the passenger seat and his dad was driving. The family were on their way back home and were driving through Stafford. It was early evening, and the sun was still shining brightly. It had been a hot sunny day, and the weather was clear and still with very little cloud in the sky.
They were on Riverway in the centre of Stafford and pulled up to some lights at a crossroads with Weston Road. There were a few other cars around, but as it was a Sunday afternoon it was quite quiet.

Anthony noticed out of his peripheral vision to his left a glinting white light in the sky. He looked around in the direction of the light. It was only there for a second and then it was gone again. A moment later the light returned but appeared to be a little closer this time. Once again it went off. It appeared a third time and was even closer, but still quite a way off to the West of his location. This time the white light remained on. Then a second light came on below it and to the right. Next an orange/red coloured light appeared to the left of the lower right one. This looked less intensely bright than the other lights. Another white light appeared to the left of the red/orange light. At this moment, the space in between the lights was filled to reveal a black triangular shaped object. It was as if it had been invisible and had now "decloaked". The object had a central white light on the top, a white light on the underside at each of the three corners and what looked like a larger red/orange coloured light in the centre of the underside. The body of the UFO was jet black in colour and was not reflecting sunlight. No other markings could be made out. It looked about 25 feet wide by 15 feet in height. It was roughly 150 feet in the air and Anthony believed it to be about half a mile from his location.

Anthony was immediately convinced he was looking at an extraterrestrial craft. He knew it was different to any conventional aircraft and he was astounded by how it had suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Straight away he informed everyone else in the car about the craft and pointed it out to them. But for some reason none of them could see it, even though it was quite obvious against the clear sky. They were all staring blankly out of the windows, and looked almost like they had been switched off.
He thought about taking a photograph of the craft and realised his camera was in the glove box. He asked his mum to pass him the camera but at this moment something strange began to occur. It was like time was moving in slow motion. His mother refused to hand him the camera. Her voice sounded slurred like a slowed down tape. He leaned forward past her to grab the camera himself, and she raised her hands to block him. She seemed determined not to let him have the camera, and Anthony could not understand why. He was excited at what he was seeing but at the same time angry and frustrated that his mother would not let him have the camera.
This seemed to go on for 3-4 minutes, but Anthony feels that it was actually shorter than this. After all they were only at a red light waiting for it to go green. His dad is a careful driver, but as soon as the lights changed he stepped on the pedal and wheelspun away from the lights as fast as he could. He drove the car onward onto Corporation Street. Anthony shouted at him to stop the car and let him out so he could continue to watch the UFO, but he refused and continued driving at a fast speed. It was like he wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. A moment later the craft became obscured behind some buildings and Anthony did not see it again.
The family drove back to their home, and when they arrived Anthony furiously asked them why they had done what they did. Everyone else in the car had completely forgotten about the incident. The last thing they remembered was Anthony mentioning the craft and trying to point it out to them. It was like their memories of the experience had been removed. Anthony on the other hand could clearly remember everything which took place. His mother could not remember stopping him from grabbing the camera, and his dad would not give a proper reason for why he had not let Anthony out of the car.
The Police Sighting
A couple of weeks after the sighting, the family received a copy of the local Stafford news letter through the door. In it was an article which mentioned that two police officers had seen a black triangular shaped UFO hovering over the Staffordshire Police HQ at Baswich House, Weeping Cross, Stafford, 1.5 miles away from where Anthony's sighting had occurred. The article stated that the police had contacted the Ministry Of Defence and that they had confirmed it had been detected on radar and had been a real object. Unfortunately I have been unable to locate this article yet online, and Anthony did not keep it.

It is great when other sightings of the same UFO take place as this tends to confirm it as a real solid object. With this case it is even more impressive in that the witnesses were police officers and the MOD actually confirmed the object was there. It was almost certainly the same craft that Anthony had seen, although he is not sure if this second incident took place on the same day as his own sighting or not.
Sighting Analysis
This is a very impressive sighting of what appears to have been a genuine Flying Triangle. This type of craft has been seen many times before all over the world, especially in the last couple of decades. They are sometimes massive in size and have been seen to perform incredible manoeuvres at extremely fast speeds.
The way in which Anthony saw the craft appear from thin air is very impressive. It tends to suggest that it had some kind of cloaking device, and was uncloaking for some reason, or perhaps it was even coming through from another dimension into our own. It was a clear sky so it could not have simply appeared from behind a cloud or from behind another object.
What took place next clearly seems to suggest that either the craft or its occupants were directly interacting with the other people in the car - Anthony's parents, wife and child. It seems plausible that it could have been aware that it was being observed by Anthony, and that he intended to take a photograph of it. It then appeared to place everyone around Anthony under some kind of control. This was verified not only by what took place, but by the fact that they could not remember what had happened afterwards. This was a normal drive home in daylight hours, so I feel it is out of the question that they all dropped off to sleep or were hallucinating. The second sighting by the police also helps confirm that the object was real and in the area at the time.
Contactees have often reported that the ETs have the ability to shut people down temporarily, and also often remove memories of the event. Some believe that they have the ability to distort time in some way. All of these things seem to have been demonstrated throughout this incident, again pointing towards interaction between the craft and Anthony's family. I do not feel there is currently any evidence to suggest that any further contact took place.
Due to the time of day the object was seen, I do wonder if there were any other witnesses to the craft who have yet to come forward. If you are reading this and also saw it, please get in touch.

TV news reporters described seeing a bright light that suddenly broke into three pieces, then four, and then seemingly hovered in the air. Comparing the El Paso lights (at night) with the balloon UFOs seen (midday) over Manhattan shortly before (see previous Blog entry), their 'triangular patterns' were described as "eerily similar." (Hint to UFOlogists: any three points define a triangle, unless they are all on a straight line.)
Commenters on the website of KTSM-TV, Channel 9 in El Paso, made comments like "I saw then thinking it was an airsho[w] drill, but planes cannot stay still that long and then a fourth one appear. This is the stuff government won't tell us," or "Planes of any kind, we would have been able to see then. Definitely UFO's!" ( http://www.ktsm.com/mysterious-lights-over-east-el-paso ). Somebody made the obligatory (and utterly irrational) comment "This universe is far and beyond! What makes us think that us humans are the only ones here?" (The universe is indeed vast, but just because ET intelligence probably exists somewhere "DOES NOT" mean that they must be here right now!) Then the same fallacy surfaces a second time: "Amazing footage! But to say their [sic] airplanes....c'mon! I don't believe anyone is going to buy into that. It's selfish to believe that we're the only one's in existence. Fact of the matter is, it's a UFO."
Sorry folks, but we know exactly what this "UFO" was. The Golden Knights is the Parachute Team of the U.S. Army, that does performances at air shows all around the country.Team member Rachel Medley wrote "Black Team performed a night jump last night into the Amigo Air Show evening social event, then did two mass formations with the beautiful desert and mountains as a backdrop." ( http://armygk.com/2010/10/hola-el-paso-black-teams-in-town/ ) She added, "I was actually on that jump as the team videographer and have performed many night jumps as a member of the Golden Knights. We are commonly mistaken as UFOs or meteors," because they jump out of airplanes with pyrotechnics strapped to their ankles. Many people refused to believe that they could have been seeing pyrotechnic parachutists, but Ms. Medley simply replied by inviting them to witness forthcoming shows by the Golden Knights elsewhere in Texas.
So the moral of our story is: when you're looking skyward, all that glitters is not UFOs.

MORE BLOGGERS JUMP INTO MUFON DEBATE
Rick Phillips at Barf Stew makes reference to the MUFON debate at FAA Makes Curious `UFO Call Statement' - As UK Shuts Down Same, in particular the MUFON 'Star Team' and Robert Bigelow's involvement in the network.
Quoting from Rick's post... Now, reading between the lines about Mr. Capp's assertions about MUFON and Lon's readers experiences (Joe's readers too) -- it doesn't take too much of an imagination to believe that UFO reports are now being `funnelled' - into organizations that may be less than forthcoming with the results - (In the links above you can see how some MUFON reports `vanish'.) - while providing the `cover' of real investigative interest.
Also... it seems mighty strange for the FAA to give one damn about who those reports should go to by the MOST BELIEVABLE AUTHORITIES - PILOTS AND AIR CONTROL
and then - for THAT company to have ANY link to MUFON - doubles that strangeness.
Or, could this be a way for Mr. Bigelow - to be positioned by our government - as the ultimate spokesperson for `Anomalous Disclosure' to the world?

Gray Barker's own, unique take on what is arguably that most mysterious of all crypto-creatures - the Mothman - is now back in print.
Yep, his classic title, "THE SILVER BRIDGE" (the original of which regularly goes for a whopping 150.00 and above online) has just been re-printed.
My review-copy arrived yesterday; however, Andy Colvin - the author of "THE MOTHMAN'S PHOTOGRAPHER" trilogy of books and the driving force behind the new edition - tells me it won't be available on Amazon until later this week or possibly next.
It's been at least 15 years since I last read Barker's book; and so rather than review it here from memory, I'm going to re-read it and then write my review.

They have the usual witness interviews, two of which are fairly impressive, and the usual grainy films of lights in the sky (though this time, one of the shots is in daylight). The thing that makes this episode of UH more interesting is the addition of new, more skeptical crew member, Kevin. Like me, Kevin sometimes rolls his eyes at Bills wilder theories, and, unlike the other team members, even challenges some of them as outlandish. Among the outlandish theories this week: aliens and the government are building UFOs together (or at least the government is back-engineering UFOs), UFOs are attracted to the gold in the California hills, and triangular aircraft have been seen in American skies back to pre-Columbian times. (Though really these are not theories, they are hypotheses, or maybe suppositions.) Part of the "proof" of this last supposition is the supposed delta-wing sculptures made by pre-Columbian artists. One UFOlogist "expert" contends that the theory that these tiny sculptures were birds or insects is absurd because of the anatomy. Two points from a former A+ student of art history on this: 1) artistic anatomy is frequently inaccurate to life; just look any given set of Egyptian tomb paintings, or the Venus of Willendorf, or the works of Henry Moore (to name very few), 2) I seem to remember that some art expert claimed that these decorative creatures might be "fish", which is what they look like to me: stylized fish. The anatomy fits. Further, Ill suggest that some research on the art of the people who produced these artifacts will likely reveal how stylized their art was; if they were doing human sculptures like Michelangelo and then these "aircraft," well... Then maybe we have a case for accurate representation of flying machines on the tiny sculptures. But, I doubt thats what youd turn up in the art of these people. (Enough art history lesson.) An analysis of the daylight footage seems to prove the three lights seen are connected, though the show people dont seem to see the same level of "blooming effect" that I do (which makes areas outside of bright lights darker in video pictures). They find nothing unusual checking gold mines for evidence of alien mining. (Surprise.) Then they fly a model of the pre-Columbian "aircraft" and it glides -- a little bit. However, despite the model makers insistence that he changed "nothing" in making his model, I dont see any of the bumps or ridges, or other "design elements" on the real item. So, its accurate exept the parts we dont like? Despite what Bill says, it is "not" an exact replica; Kevin posits that it may be a replica of a flying toy of the time (like an Aztec paper airplane). The rest of the team rejects this, and to me it still looks like a flying fish. Yet, as the show points out, people are seeing strange triangular craft all over the world. Personally, I favor Kevins theory of secret government aircraft. Remember the Blackbird is 50 years old, folks. If they could make that then, what can they make now?

Mysteriously, 30 seconds before the show was to air, a 45 minute power black out meant the live interview could not go ahead. Responding to a request to explain what happened by Mel Fabregas, host of Radio Veritas, George Knapp said: "The power went out 30 seconds before I went on the air, stopped for 45 minutes, enough to kill the show". I contacted Adam Grant from Nevada Power to clarify what happened and he confirmed that the outage lasted approximately 40 minutes.
The 'accidental' power outage meant that millions of Coast to Coast listeners were denied the opportunity to hear the most up-to-date evidence of the alleged Eisenhower and extraterrestrial meeting on its 55th anniversary. More significantly, the show may have encouraged witnesses to step forward to reveal what they knew on the anniversary of the most secret diplomatic meeting in U.S. history. A replay of an earlier Coast to Coast Show featuring the host, George Knapp, was aired for the night. The power blackout may have been entirely accidental. Full Description of event/sighting: I was walking north in Islington St with my friend, towards Bloor St. We had been talking about the big dipper, so we were looking up at the sky a lot. I spotted a group of moving lights, fairly faint but moving with some speed across the sky. I thought it was a jet aircraft because it resembled the outline of one, but there was no silhouette on the sky, and there were no blinking lights at all. At one point, I saw them fly in front of a bright star overhead, and the star didn't wink, so there was no solid body there. There was also no noise or anything. I pointed them out to my friend just before they went down behind some trees. I thought they were maybe satellites flying in some elaborate formation, but to be honest I have no idea what they were. I'm curious if anyone else in the Toronto area saw the same thing as me. They moved from the northwest to the south east.

A Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS), may have been launched a few weeks ago, providing early warning of ballistic missile launches and support of other missions. It comes in highly elliptical orbit (HEO) and GEO flavors.
Meanwhile, a countdown is under way for the second attempt to launch a Thuraya satellite phone plaform for the United Arab Emirates. Thuraya handsets have a dual-mode feature that allows them to operate in the Thuraya satellite network and GSM terrestrial mobile networks. It is scheduled for a Tuesday liftoff from Sea Launch.

I always look forward to the annual Pacific Telecommunications Conference, held mid January in Hawaii, since it generally seems to meet right in the middle of a major satellite or transoceanic fiber disaster.
Meanwhile, the asteroid that was previously believed to have a decent chance of hitting Mars later this month will almost certainly miss the strike zone after all. NASA hopes to find about 90% of the largest asteroids that could potentially strike Earth, by the end of this year. These asteroids can be as large as mountains but are at least 1 kilometer (3,280.8 feet) in diameter. NASA estimates that 900 of these objects are in potentially hazardous range of Earth.
NASA's Messenger (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) spacecraft will make the first extraterrestrial visit to Mercury in almost 33 years when it zooms by the barren planet on Monday, January 14. Messenger's long-term goal is to orbit Mercury, but that won't happen until 2011 after it makes several orbits of the sun and three close encounters with the planet, reports C/Net.
Researchers are also preparing to explore Europa's surface and ultimately into its ocean. Their testbed is under the Antarctic.
Russian and British scientists discovered the existence of Lake Vostok, some 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) beneath Vostok Station in the Antarctic, 12 years ago. The lake contains liquid water under the three-kilometer thick icecap, promising to be the most unspoiled lake on Earth. Cores samples suggest the lake has been sealed under the icecap for up to a million years.
Next month they're sending down a Cryobot.
Along with Mars, Europa offers one of the best opportunities in the solar system for finding extraterrestrial life. "That's why this is so important," said Bill Stone, head of Austin-based Stone Aerospace.

A retired pilot in Alliance, OH, reported watching four unusual objects that resembled "an orange-yellow fireball" flying in formation beginning about 9:23 p.m. on April 21, 2013, according to testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness was outside placing items into his pickup truck when the first three objects were seen.
"I closed the truck door and pivoted to my left (now facing north) to go back in my house, when I noticed on the horizon three objects approximately 30 degrees above the horizon at an altitude of 3500 MSL (2500 AGL in this area)," the witness stated. "The objects were flying in formation with the lead craft in the middle and the other two craft approximately one nautical mile back and one nautical mile to either side of the lead craft."The witness became startled at what he was seeing.
"I am a retired pilot and the reason I was startled is that I initially stared at the lead object only due to the fact that it resembled an aircraft, especially a turbo-prop, with an engine fire. My eyes were obviously drawn to the other two craft as well and I did not know what to make of what I was seeing. The craft [was] heading due west (270 degrees) making no sound."The witness says he was shook up by the incident.
"I'm really kind of shook up by this. I just was asked by someone the other day if I had ever seen anything whenever I was flying, you know, UFOs they asked. Honestly and emphatically, no. In other UFO news today, a Sprague River, OR, witness reports waking up during the night and discovering 15 entities "three-four feet in height and dark gray," according to April 22, 2013, MUFON testimony.
"I was sleeping in my bedroom when I sensed that something/someone was looking at me, so I opened my eyes," the witness stated. "My night light was on, so I could see clearly somewhat. A Sprague River, OR, witness reported that a 10-foot-wide "swirling mass" appeared in her bedroom like a vortex opening up after awakening from six hours of sleep, according to April 22, 2013, testimony from MUFON.
The witness was in bed with her husband at the time and had one drink before retiring for the night and woke thinking they were in the middle of an earthquake.
"Six hours later I awoke incredibly afraid," the witness stated. "I awoke thinking we were having an earthquake but instead I found that I was being rocked from side to side violently to the point of nearly flipping over. My body was totally relaxed, yet my body was being lifted quite a bit off the mattress. I laid there just observing (really wondering 'what the hell') was going on."The woman reached out to grab onto the bed sheets in an attempt to stabilize herself.
"I looked around the room and noticed a swirling in front of me. The mass was rotating in a clockwise direction and then froze in position. So now I was still looking at it with the door bent along with the rest of the room and its furnishings in that area all frozen in this clockwise position in that whirling mass. I could see streaks where the objects moved from as though one had taken a picture of a fast-moving object. I turned to look at my husband sleeping. And finally, an Arizona witness near Wellton recalled a bizarre encounter with a "hockey puck-sized UFO" during the summer of 1975 that hovered and darted around she and her sibling for 15 minutes, according to April 22, 2013, MUFON testimony.
The witness and her brother were outside smashing cans when the object was first noticed.
"We both were suddenly aware of a hockey puck-sized UFO hovering very close by as if watching what we were doing," the witness stated. "We kept looking at it, trying to figure out if it was some sort of weird bird or huge insect as it hummed, almost like the noise that a hummingbird makes. It was "no" hummingbird."The witness described the object.
"It was shaped like a hockey puck (round), a black/dark gray, dull surface, that was not smooth looking. It looked like the color of a gun barrel but not as smooth. The object hovered, moving smoothly toward us, and then backward, it moved quickly back and forth, left and right."No images or videos were included with MUFON Case 46899. Reports of small UFOs make up a low percentage of all U.S. sightings annually, but are a continuing category for investigators.
On June 10, 2011, in MUFON Case 29547, an Arizona couple described a "star-like fireball" that was three-feet across and followed their car at about the height of their windows for two minutes during a nighttime drive about halfway between Las Vegas, NV, and Kingman, AZ -- putting them roughly 50 miles north of Kingman, a town about 150 miles west of Flagstaff.
The couple left the T.J. Shepherd show in Las Vegas about 9:30 p.m. and decided to drive home to Golden Valley -- about eight miles from Kingman, AZ. About halfway through the trip, the woman's husband, a passenger, "pointed out a star-like fireball following the car at window height. It disappeared in about two minutes -- vanishing."
Realizing they were alone on the highway, the woman, who was driving, decided to attempt to catch up to cars that were ahead of her.
"I decided to try to catch up to the cars that were ahead of it that were going 65 MPH," the woman stated. "I was the last car in line. They took off so fast that I was going 80 MPH and I could not catch up with them."Now the couple found themselves alone along a dark stretch of desert highway as the "fireball" moved in front of their vehicle.
It was going the same speed as us. It was a little bit bigger than three feet across. It followed us for about two minutes, and then vanished. This all happened halfway between Las Vegas and Kingman.When the object moved in front of their car, it was about 15 feet ahead of them. They were able to get a good look at the object.
"When the object was in front of the car it stayed about 15 feet even in front of the car. I had a good look at the star-like fireball. My husband said this object appeared as a white, really bright object. When I first saw it I said to my husband, 'I guess they really do exist.' When the star-like fireball right in front of the car was observed, I said, 'I don't want to be a specimen.'"Two weeks after this incident, an Arizona witness traveling the 44 miles between Flagstaff and the small town of Leupp at 1:21 a.m. on June 24, 2011, had an encounter with an object that descended for the sky to just four feet off of the highway and moved along the driver's side of the car in MUFON Case 29703.
" I was able to clearly see it light the ground up red," the witness stated. "It flew parallel to my vehicle and just about kept the same speed as my vehicle (65 mph). The orb itself was red and emitting a red glow - darker red in the center, brighter red around the edges. It was to the left of the vehicle, approximately 50 yards away. At this point I was feeling panicked, afraid and curious."The object eventually moved away and shot off into the sky.
"No noise, besides engine noise was noted. The only notable difference was the presence of a cellphone signal (there usually is none). It followed my vehicle for a quarter-mile and it sped up two car lengths in front of me and abruptly made a 90-degree turn, upward into the sky, at which point I leaned forward to see it shoot across the sky like a shooting star toward the east."The above quotes were edited for clarity.
