Time travel has enchanted and intrigued us since the earliest days of fiction, when authors such as H. G. Wells, Samuel Madden, Charles Dickens and Enrique Gaspar y Rimbau stretched and challenged our imaginations with images and tales of men and women who invented amazing machines and devices that could take them back in time, or forward into the future. But because of the restrictions of light speed, and the paradoxes of going back to the past without damaging the future timeline, and a host of other obstacles and challenges, we, in fact, have remained stuck in the present.
Our scientific knowledge and technological achievement has yet to catch up to the limitless dreams of our imaginations. But perhaps just because we have yet to achieve time travel in our universe, in our particular point along the cosmic arrow of time, doesn't mean it isn't achievable...and maybe the key is the universe itself. Are we limiting ourselves to our understanding only of the laws and possibilities of our universe, and leaving out of the equation other realities, other universes, with other laws and forces, paradoxes and limitation, possibilities and potentialities, far beyond our own?

Date: November 6, 2012Hello, like many others, I was staying up to watch the election.
My mother, cheering on, and booing on, I got bored so I looked out the window to watch the moon.
My father, being in the Airforce, taught me many things about planes, and what they are like in the sky, both day, and night.
As looked up, into the fully dark sky, the moon was still behind the hills, but I saw what I thought was a plane. I gave a laugh as to the colors, and how it went blue, red, sliver, blue, red very fast. I thought, well, they must like colors.
After about 5 minutes, I looked out again, and the moon was still hidden, but, the "plane" was still there, had not moved, still, I thought nothing of it, I'm not one to care, but after about five minutes I looked again, and this time, I was shocked. It was moving, but it would move left, right, forward, backwards, beyond fast.
I could not think of anything that could ever move so fast, be 100% silent, and make the sudden turns.
I called my mother over, and told her look at this. Now mom, she, yes, believes in UFO's, but only thought they would be somewhere like a city, never in old Clarion, PA. We watched, as it was bright, making such weird crazy moves, but always stopping around the same spot.
After a few minutes, I had by this point, stopped watching, but then, she called for me and there it was, there was two more. They was not a bright, dual, but still, amazing color.
These were not satellites, they do not move in the crazy weird ways like this. After hearing Obama won, I gave a cheer, and was off to bed! Laying down, I laughed at how I felt crazy, thinking "did i really just see a UFO, silent, and weird moving"
During the night, mom deiced she was done watching the news, yes, 2:00 a.m., and she went to bed, but before, she took one last look out, and, they were gone, going to the restroom, she looked out the window, (south looking) and, there it was, making weird movements, very pretty. Silent.

It's an interesting question. If an extraterrestrial craft lands in the United States how will the various levels of government react? The notion of various levels of government is important, because any form of sudden First Contact, such as a craft landing in the United States, will face several levels of government scrutiny.
It all starts with the local police. These first responders would most likely set the tone for the entire event. Do they react with extreme concern, shut down the scene, and remove humans from the area? Do they call the feds immediately or do they try and figure out the situation first?
You could certainly argue that an extreme reaction and immediate appeal to the federal government for help is the most likely scenario. It's an idea expressed by writer Jim Wilson in an intelligent Popular Mechanics article from February of 2004:

You could certainly see a situation in which there would be such a swift and unwelcoming federal response. If the landing was threatening, or unexplained, it could certainly inspire a level of fear that would provoke such a reaction.
However, one thing left out of this scenario is the disbelief factor. We have been deluged with alien landing stories and movies for years. Because of this, and because we have become understandably cynical in this age of instantaneous news, most people are likely to think any craft landing in the United States is part of some elaborate hoax. The question is how long this disbelief would last. It's an important question because it goes directly to the response. If the local and state agencies responding to a craft landing maintain a healthy level of skepticism, it will take a while before federal authorities are called in to investigate. How long? Perhaps a few hours, maybe less. You would imagine it would take at least an hour or two for local police to sort out the scene, call for back-up and make decisions with the political leaders at the city, county and then state level. This process would have to occur before federal authorities would be called in. Contrary to portrayals in the movies the federal government doesn't move very quickly. I think Mr. Wilson is correct in the idea that the FBI would be the first to arrive on the scene. These would be local agents from the nearest bureau and even their appearance would probably take an hour or two.
So, how do you organize First Contact so that a complete overreaction by the federal authorities is avoided? The media is the key. There is only one thing almost as powerful as the federal government and that is the combined power of the local and national media outlets. When news is breaking the media can control how the coverage will proceed, but only if they are on the scene quickly enough. Now this is certainly not the case in a plane crash. We have all seen police and then federal investigators secure a plane crash scene and keep the media at bay. But First Contact wouldn't be a plane crash. In fact, the one thing that helps the situation is that there is probably no standard response for such a First Contact type of event anywhere at the local or state level. You would imagine the federal government would have some such response plan, but how quickly would they implement such a plan?
This subject is important because First Contact can go two ways. It can be an open and positive hello to the entire planet. Or it can be a secretive and paranoid series of governmental overreactions. The key is to engage the power of the news media immediately. To do this there has to be some human help. Extraterrestrials can't just walk off a spacecraft and say hello. There has to be a process, and a quick one at that. It needs to engage media coverage immediately and then set forth a motion of process that goes so quickly that government bodies get left behind, essentially playing catch up and struggling with crowd control. This won't be easy. It will take detailed preparation and controlled execution.
First Contact can either be a celebratory moment or one of fear and distrust. How it is organized and carried out is critical. And the results would most likely impact the relationship with our new neighbors for many years to come. It has to be done right.

This portion created silence in the group. But as I told everyone, this is a potential abduction and the human mind is very complex. Someone dreams may be seen as reality. The program ended with questions and answers. Very few, if anybody left before the end. I related a few weeks back how I was trying to stop being so much of a Closet Anomalist. Aside from my continued blogging here at Forteania, the easiest way I felt that I could really 'come out' so to speak was by joining a Fortean group. The one that immediately sprang to my mind, as I'm sure it does to other's as well, was MUFON. The Mutual UFO Network is arguably one of the best know Ufological groups in the US, if not in the world. I have to be honest though as soon as I thought about MUFON I almost immediately discarded the idea. MUFON has had a lot of issues in the last few years, and many of the more public faces of the organization would probably not feel out of place in a Church of Ufology.
However my need to burst out of my shell and finally be able to speak openly with people about all of these strange topics overrode that initial gut reaction I had, so I sought out to join my local MUFON chapter. As I related in a recent post (see Closet Anomalist/Fortean updates!) when I went to the main MUFON website, it offers you links to your local chapters website. So I followed the links to the South Carolina Chapter of MUFON's home page and for just a few minutes I though I had been transported back to 1998. Seriously check it out and see if you disagree. Go on, I'll wait. OK are you back? Can you believe that? I mean I realize that my blog isn't exactly the most Flash or Java heavy site out there, but at least its better than a block of text that apparently hasn't been updated since 1999.
Even after this bit of disillusionment, I still decided to struggle through. I figured that maybe they had just been so busy with meetings and investigations that perhaps they didn't have time to fix up the website or hire some web builder to do it for them. With this in my mind I called both numbers located on the site, neither one returned an answer. It was a sad moment for your friendly neighborhood Closet Anomalist. But it was then that I noticed there was an email address that you could use to contact the State Director! I set about emailing the director, I asked the director if (1) The local MUFON group was still holding meetings, and (2) if so where/when and how could I attend?
Thankfully the director was able to return my email within about 11 hours, which was really prompt and I was very happy about that. Unfortunately however the answer I got wasn't exactly what I was hoping for. Basically she informed me that my local chapter of MUFON is no longer holding meetings and that if I wanted to do anything with MUFON I would have to join the website. Except that is exactly what I didn't want to do. Remember I wanted to actually meet people in meat space in order to discuss these kinds of Fortean topics. Since I didn't have any alternative I signed up for the mailing list, after all I'm not going to pay their membership fee cause I'm cheap, and so I started receiving emails from MUFON.
That brings me back to today, on Monday I received an email from MUFON describing one of the speakers that they would be having at the annual MUFON Symposium. The particular speaker that they had singled was Barbara Lamb. Now Lamb is, evidently, a licensed Psychotherapist who has had 21 years of research in the Ufological field. The gist of her speech is going to be on the 'Alien-Human Hybrid' problem that is facing humanity. Quoting from the actual email "She will describe the methods used to achieve hybridization, how long hybridization has been occurring, the reasons given by the ETs for creating hybrid offspring, and the success rate and failure rate in creating hybrids who could live successfully on earth. Having just finished writing an (apparently successful) post about the 'First Church of Ufology', I actually almost threw up when I read the email. This was almost exactly the kind of stuff that I think is wrong with Ufology. I mean here is a group that gives off the veneer of being a respectable scientific organization but they are letting a lady speak about what basically amounts to a part of a belief system. The email reads, at least to me, like something you might find in a New Age magazine. Not that there is anything wrong with that necessarily but I mean come on, Indigo Children, really?
The email basically helped me come to the conclusion that MUFON is not an organization that I necessarily want anything to do with. While it may be good for some people, it is definitely not the organization for me. At this point I seem to be stuck on the Internet as my only outlet for my Fortean shenanigans. I'm not complaining, I have loved doing this blog, and its given me chance to talk to some cool people in the Fortean field. I may have to remain a Closet Anomalist a little while longer, in the mean time of course I will continue blogging here and writing for Binnall of America. The synchronicity continues!
This weekend, as I've been cleaning up my MUFON Investigation files, a couple of interesting things have happened. First of all, I checked in with Vxxxx, my State Director, to see if she still wanted me to be "Chief Investigator" and she does. This had kind of fallen off the radar screen lately, so I'm glad I asked. I'm definitely thinking about it again. It would be cool to have a hand in all the investigations in Wisconsin, as long as it doesn't cut into my time writing the book and, you know, living.
Right on the heels of that conversation, Vxxxx forwarded me an intriguing letter from a potential Close Encounter of the Third Kind "experiencer" and asked if I wanted to take on the investigation... I hesitated for a moment because this one sounds really intense. But I had to take it on in the end, in part because Vxxxx mentioned the potential need for a Faraday Cage. "A Faraday Cage?" Yes, a Faraday Cage; a cage made of non-conducting material to shield a person, place or thing from electric charges. See photo below...
How could I pass up a case that can only be solved with the use of a Faraday Cage? Who could resist this?
I don't feel free to share any details of the case, because the witness seems to be in great distress, but I can't help wondering why I keep getting all these entity encounter cases...
No time to worry about that now, because in today's mailbag I got this thought-provoking comment:
"MUFON has been in existence since 1969. Since these beginnings and all those reports filed, someone must have drawn some conclusions. I went to the MUFON website and what I could find was that UFOs are still an 'unexplained mystery.' Is that the best you folks can come up with after all this time
First of all, what's with this "you folks" business? I just work here.
Second of all, UFOs still are an unexplained mystery, because if they were explained there would be no MUFON website to describe them as unexplained mysteries.
But, seriously, the commenter's question is completely fair. In all these years, after all these investigations, why hasn't MUFON drawn some conclusions and come up with an explanation?
There are many answers to that question, I think. MUFON and many other organizations and investigators and the U.S. Air Force have attempted many, many times to draw conclusions and explain the mystery, but they are always stymied by the elusive nature of the phenomenon. Just when someone thinks they've nailed it down, the phenomenon takes on a new form and leaves us even more puzzled than we were before. Without any completely unquestionable physical evidence that UFOs are physical objects, we can never be sure what they are or where they come from or who/what may be controlling them. All we ever have to go on is witness accounts, and experience has shown that we can never be absolutely, positively sure of those.
So, does MUFON have a reason to exist? I think so. For one thing, it gives thousands of people around the world a chance to tell someone about an experience they can't make sense of and probably can't talk to anyone about. Case in point: the witness involved in this new case with the Faraday Cage has been keeping his experiences to himself for years, for fear of ridicule. Without MUFON, he and many others would have no place to go.
In my one year of being a Certified UFO Field Investigator, I have seen this play out over and over... so many people are relieved, and even thrilled, that someone will listen to their story, take them seriously, and help them understand what they experienced. Witnesses have told me on numerous occasions how surprised they are to hear from me, because they never expected anyone to take their report seriously enough to follow up on it.
And the more cases we document and archive, the better the chances that someday someone will recognize a pattern and figure it all out. Or even figure out a tiny bit of it; I'm not picky.

In the early morning hours of July 17, 1957, a U.S. Air Force crew aboard an RB-47, a plane loaded with the most sophisticated state-of-the-art surveillance and electronic countermeasures gear, reportedly encountered and was followed across several southern states by one or more UFOs, seen visually as well as on radar. Some UFOlogists consider this the best UFO evidence of all time. It was investigated as Case 5 of the University of Colorado's Air-Force-sponsored Condon Report, which cited the absence of an official report supposed to have been written on the incident, and concluded "Evaluation of the experience must, therefore, rest entirely on the recollection of crew members ten years after the event. These descriptions are not adequate to allow identification of the phenomenon encountered."

The UFO Casebook says, "An Air Force RB-47, equipped with electronic countermeasures (ECM) gear and manned by six officers, was followed by an unidentified object for a distance of well over 700 miles, and for a time period of 1.5 hr., as it flew from Mississippi, through Louisiana and Texas and into Oklahoma.
"The object was, at various times, seen visually by the cockpit crew as an intensely luminous light, followed by ground-radar and detected on ECM monitoring gear aboard the RB-47.
"Of special interest in this case are several instances of simultaneous appearances and disappearances on all three of those physically distinct "channels," and rapidity of maneuvers beyond the prior experience of the aircrew."
There is a brand new in-depth investigation of this case by Tim Printy, just published in his WebZine SunLite, January/February, 2012. It is one of the most complex cases in all UFOlogy. I cannot possibly give more than a brief summary here; Printy's analysis runs over thirty pages, and is enormously significant in the history of this major case, and thus in the ongoing debate over the reality of UFOs.
Printy begins by making what is, to me, a crucial observation: "It does seem rather odd that the UFO would decide to use an S-band radar signal to track or test an Air Force RB-47. It is this clue that seems to have been glossed over/down played by those presenting this case as the best evidence." In other words, the UFO seems to have been sending out (but only in this case) S-band radar signals with exactly the same characteristics as those used by the U.S. Air Force at that time. How strange is that if the UFO is sending out exactly the same kind of radar signals we do? So isn't it likely, then, that the source of the signals was not an extraterrestrial craft, but instead a misidentified terrestrial one?

Printy notes how the late atmospheric physicist and Ufologist Dr. James E. McDonald interviewed the RB-47 crew and wrote a paper on this case. "McDonald's stamp of approval had immediately made this case a "classic." The famous UFO skeptic, the late Philip J. Klass, "took on the case in 1971 and wrote a rather extensive study on the incident. Klass suggested that it was equipment malfunction, a bright fireball, an airliner, and reception of ground radar signals that made the event appear mysterious to the air crew." This analysis can be found in Chapters 19 and 20 of Klass' 1974 book "UFOs Explained".
In the 1990s, UFOlogist Brad Sparks, who styles himself as "the "RB-47 expert" in his email address, re-evaluated the case. Sparks concluded that Klass had erred, most especially in asserting that the RB-47 had, because of an equipment malfunction, erroneously picked up signals from the radar station at Kessler Air Force base in Biloxi, Mississippi, which was a training facility for radar operators and repairmen. That radar, said Sparks, was not operating at the time of the incident! Sparks wrote, "Since it was a nine-month course it was apparently run during the normal academic term from September to June approximately. In other words, there would not have been a class in session to operate the CPS-6B even in the daytime, let alone nighttime, in the midst of summer vacation, on July 17, when the RB-47 incident took place."
Sparks simply assumed that, since this was not during the "academic year," the training radar would have been turned off! But Printy looked into the matter very closely of whether or not the Kessler radar was operational at the time in question. He found (as he, a retired Navy submariner, already surely knew), that military training schedules bear no resemblance at all to those of colleges! In fact, Printy found that the Kessler facility had been operating at maximum training capacity in July, 1957, and that some classes were indeed scheduled between midnight and 6AM.
Overall, Printy found that while Klass' analysis contains some errors, his overall conclusions still stand. If you have any interest in the RB-47 c ontroversy, or if you want to read one of the very finest research papers ever published about any UFO case, then I encourage you to read Printy's paper, and come to your own conclusion about this important and controversial UFO case.
Documentary filmmaker James Fox and screenwriter and film producer Tracy Torme talked about their forthcoming feature film 701, a documentary which explores the origins of the UFO phenomenon, and the government suppression of evidence. 701 refers to the number of cases that remained unexplained as part of Project Blue Book, the study of UFOs conducted by US Air Force from 1948 -- 1969. For their new film, Fox said he interviewed Col. William Coleman, the spokesman for Project Blue Book, who as a pilot in 1955 had an encounter/chase with a flying saucer over Alabama. Along with Coleman, the passengers in his plane, who were engineers from Lockheed Martin, were all perplexed by the movements of the metallic craft, which had no signs of any propulsion.
Fox collected materials at the National Archives regarding the 1964 Socorro, NM UFO case in which police officer Lonnie Zamora saw something fly overhead, and then approached a shiny egg-shaped object that had landed nearby off a dirt road. He saw two occupants, who initially he thought were children. One of the occupants was startled to see him approaching, and the craft took off before he got much closer, Fox recounted. Discussing the pros and cons of various hypothesis for UFOs, Torme gave credence to the interplanetary explanation, noting that the galaxy is probably teeming with life, while Fox considered the dimensional theory a possibility, considering how UFOs seem to wink out or disappear.
Fox, who announced a 100,000 reward for proof of an ET craft, also entertained the idea that UFOs could be associated with time travelers, returning to our time period as a kind of history lesson. Torme, who was acquainted with the late Gene Roddenberry (the creator of Star Trek), shared the surprising revelation that Roddenberry actually thought UFO reports were bunk, as did astronomer Carl Sagan and sci-fi legend Ray Bradbury. Another case that impressed Fox and will be featured in 701 was the 1994 Zimbabwe incident, in which numerous school children saw a craft landing, and aliens who sent telepathic messages to them.

MUFON's 2011 International Symposium was held in Irvine, California, not so far from where I live in San Diego County, after several years of being held in Colorado. I didn't hear the Keynote Speaker on Friday night, veteran astronaut Story Musgrave. Last year he had been quoted in some news stories making wild UFO claims, but he had been badly misquoted. Musgrave's message was, I was told, that "the universe is very, very big," and so extraterrestrials must exist somewhere. However, he does not believe that there is any evidence that they have arrived on earth. Or as Musgrave earlier told reporter Billy Cox, "Life is everywhere in this universe, there is no evidence that it has visited earth."
One of the first things I saw upon entering the hall Saturday morning was a vendor table peddling a lot of amazingly dubious stuff. Glenn Steckling is the coordinator of the George Adamski Foundation. I expressed surprise that anybody was still interested in the fables of Adamski, who claimed to be good friends with the people from Venus, and took lots of cheesy, fake-looking UFO photos. Steckling said that there was a lot of interest in Adamski, and that he had known Adamski personally. Knowing that Adamski had been dead for 46 years, I told him, "you must have been just a kid when you knew him. I was," he replied, "I have been doing this all my life. My mother and father also knew Adamski." It's good to keep it in the family, I suppose. At the same table, Maurice Osborn (below, wearing glasses) was providing lots of useful information, like "Alien Abduction resistance" and "Beware of the Grays and Human Slavery."

The first speaker of Saturday was Richard Dolan, author and TV producer who has been keeping a pretty high profile lately. His talk was titled, "A Secret Space Program : From Rumor to reality After Disclosure." (Read my earlier Blog posting on "World Disclosure Day", the UFOlogical equivalent of the Second Coming, fervently rumored and eagerly anticipated but never occurring.) Dolan gave the audience what it wanted to hear: lots and lots of wild, unsubstantiated claims, mostly about UFOs in outer space. Like UFOs supposedly following the space shuttle missions STS-96, STS-106, and STS-111 - little blurry blips of light that might have been anything. There is lots of alien activity going on on the Moon, says Dolan, but NASA airbrushes its photos to keep them hidden. Those objects that astronomers call "shepherd moons" that keep Saturn's rings sharply-defined are actually UFOs, too. Frankly, I felt that Dolan was scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of the credibility of his claims, but later on Linda Moulton Howe and George Filer gave him some very serious competition in that regard.
The next speaker, Dr. Ted Peters, asked "Will ET Contact End World Religions?" He and a colleague did a survey of many different religious groups concerning a possible ET religious crisis. The short answer is, practically nobody said that an official announcement of the existence of ETI would cause them a serious crisis of faith. MUFONers consider this very good news, because one common argument against "Disclosure," possible social upheaval from the breakdown of religion, appears to be a non-problem. Interestingly, Peters found that religious non-believers, however, seemed convinced that ET disclosure would cause religious believers to lose their faith!
