So, even though the WAI conference is over for this year (start making plans for Atlanta (GA) February 26 - 28 2009) the speakers' words are worth repeating.Dr. Peter Diamandis was born in the Bronx, and while other kids played stickball, Diamandis was designing rockets. In 8th grade he took 1st Prize in the Estes rocket design contest. Since age 9 becoming an astronaut was his passion. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and received an undergraduate degree in Molecular Genetics and graduate degree in Aerospace Engineering. Harvard Medical School was next, and Diamandis added M.D. to his name.Realizing his chances were "1 in 1,000" of becoming a NASA astronaut, Diamandis set out to find a way to travel into space another way. "I made a commitment to do it privately," Diamandis told his audience at WAI last week.While reading The Spirit of St. Louis, Diamandis latched onto the fact Charles Lindbergh flew his solo flight for the 25,000 Ortieg Prize. "With that in mind I put together a prize," Diamandis said. "I wanted a new generation of private spaceships that I can fly and that you can fly."He wanted private enterprise, not governments to come in and win. The 10 Million purse was enough to attract private interest in the challenge. A three person spaceship would allow for a pilot and two paying passengers, and the altitude requirement was lowered from 100 miles to 100 kilometers -- "knowing full well most Americans wouldn't know the difference between the two anyway, unfortunately," joked Diamandis.Two flights in two weeks was the goal. Twenty six teams competed... and as we know, Scaled Composites took home the inaugural X-Prize in 2004."We started making headlines" Diamandis noted "And we decided afterwards to take the X Prize concept forward" Planning has started on 300 - 500 billion in prizes in the next five years in areas such as space, underwater, life sciences (including cancer), energy and the environment.The Google X Prize was announced last September. "A 30 million private race to the moon," Diamandis called it. I think it's not only necessary but inevitable and will be a net benefit to the environment."While watching the Apollo missions on television Diamandis "always wondered growing up as a kid where this zero gravity room was." In 1993, Diamandis partnered with astronaut Dr. Byron K. Lichtenberg and NASA engineer Ray Cronise. Convinced that the public would gravitate to the opportunity to experience Zero-G, they took their idea to the FAA.According to Diamandis, after the presentation the FAA response was "You want to do what?" Finally, after 11 years of meeting with lawyers, Zero-G took off. Zero-G recently won a contract to provide NASA with zero gravity services, as the space agency's official commercial provider.Education is currently Zero-G's single largest market, flying students and teachers. Diamandis imagines our engineers and scientists being shown as the heroes instead.At WAI, Diamandis announced his intent to create a program to fly the top 500 female high school or junior high school students. Diamandis envisions the local congressmen and senators meeting the flight (with an all female crew) afterwards and having media present and being broadcast around the globe. With the right sponsorship, Diamandis hopes to announce the program at a future Women in Aviation Conference. "Women can go into space and lead this arena as well," Diamandis stated.Not being satisfied with sending rockets into space, Diamandis also talked about the fledgling Rocket Racing League (RRL). "We are defining a brand new sport," said Diamandis. Somewhat bored by the standard Indy car race, Diamandis envisioned a new kind of motor sport. "For me, putting a rocket engine on anything seems like a very natural thing to do."Partnering with a friend, Diamandis gave an overview of the RRL. "We're developing a new set of vehicles called X-Racers." The X Racers will be rocket powered, delta wing, canard, single pilot vehicles. Ten racers will compete a mile up, with the course about two miles by half a mile right in front of the spectators.The engines have been developed and are being tested. "We're hoping this Spring, early Summer to have our first public flight." Diamandis revealed. "Then we'll be rapidly starting to build vehicles so by the time X Prize Cup hits next Fall/Winter we can have the first competitions." Black Triangle Sighting In Newark Ohio On October 12Th 2013 Observed 3 Non Strobing Lights In A Triangle Shape

On 10-12-13, 8:00pm, while looking at the night sky from my back yard, I observed initially a Red light coming out of the East. It appeared to be at a normal aircraft altitude, but I could see that the light was solid red and not strobing like a normal navigation light would. I grabbed my 10x50 binoculars from the house and observed that the object was comprised of 3 lights altogether, with the Red light being on the starboard side. The other two lights were white (Lead light and Port side). The 3 lights were in a triangle pattern and remained as solid lights for the entire duration I observed it (approx. 7 minutes)as it headed away from me going due West. As the craft was nearly directly above me, the Red Starboard light suddenly went from the bright red, to a matching white of the other two lights on the craft. As the craft was cruising at the speed of a normal aircraft, my guess would be about 500mph and at a altitude of about 40,000 ft. My guess would be that the craft size was that of about a normal airliner. If I had held a ruler at arms length, I would say that the lights on the craft would of been evenly spaced, about a quarter of a inch apart from each other. I could easily see the craft with the naked eye. I tried to look for details on the craft with my binoculars that would tell me if this was a normal aircraft, but I did not see any of the normal tell/tale signs. There were no strobing navigation lights and no tail section lights at all. I consider aviation as a hobby of mine and enjoy aviation history. The local police only have one helicopter, so after the third sighting I thought the objects were flares, but flares don't move in a horizontal direction. I witnessed about the 30 objects heading in north west direction as if they were following the highway. The seemed to follow the same path and have the same altitude. After several minutes I went to the front of my house to see the path these things were taking and asked my neighbours to come outside to make sure I wasn't seeing things. Both my neighbours witnessed the same reddish orange objects flying in a straight line every 10-12 seconds. They saw about 6 in total. The objects appeared to be ascending in a slight incline as they headed towards the west - but this could be my angle of observation - before I lost sight of them. I could tell by looking though a hole in a tree across the street foliage these objects weren't too high but I couldn't tell the exact angle. I heard no sound from the objects only the background noise of the city. The speed moving across the sky was approximately the same as a civilian aircraft. When I was researching my experience on the internet some comments and website suggested Chinese Lanterns but these objects were moving too fast in what appeared to be a purposeful direction on what appeared to be a almost windless night. He's got to be kidding.

The article goes on to infer that we're all suffering from collective delusions complete with "false or exaggerated beliefs that arise spontaneously, spread rapidly in a population,, and temporarily affect a region, culture or whole nation." This mass hysteria, which apparently we suffer from, contains many factors that "contribute to the rise and spread of such collective delusions, such as rumors, extraordinary public anxiety or excitement, shared cultural beliefs or stereotypes, and amplification of these by the mass media, as well as reinforcing actions by authorities such as politicians, the police or the military." Huh?

But wait - there's more. Carl Sagan, now deceased born again UFO supporter turned skeptic, (no he hasn't reincarnated) is quoted as saying that "the scientific method and the clarity it brings can help us overcome our fuzzy thinking. Thinking critically and clearly," he says, "is the means...by which deep thoughts can be winnowed from deep nonsense." The article goes on to quote Sagan as arguing, "it is far better to grasp the universe as it really is, than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring."

But is the real argument here whether science, and inevitably scientists, are doing what they proclaim, or is the real issue about the psychology of those with different perspectives not being able to escape the instinctual need to harass, debunk, bully and inevitably ostracize people in the UFO community who think differently and challenge their rusty herd mentality? To explore this let's ask ourselves how a skeptic might handle a claim about UFOs from a magician. What if the UFO community held up an opinion from such a person to support an argument for the reality of UFOs? Don't you think they might ask how the opinion of a stage magician claiming to be a "scientific investigator who exposes the falsities of pseudoscience" (see www.randi.org) can be offered to shed light on anything of a paranormal nature? I think they would. No strike that. I KNOW they would and they'd scoff loudly in the face of those who entertained such "silliness and delusion".

Meanwhile, back in the real world, it seems de Silva remains unaware of credible witness testimony when it comes to the UFO phenomenon, although he does present a mascot photo of Edgar Mitchell with the caption "Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell has claimed there is a US government cover-up about alien visitations" but that's as far as he appears willing to go in debunking a witness who holds 3 science degrees, one of which is a PhD, plus 4 honorary degrees in engineering (see www.edmitchellapollo14.com/edmbio.htm). Perhaps if Dr Mitchell had a background in magic de Silva might go further.

The feature goes on to include the debunking of Crop Circles, stating, "it's hard enough to conceive why intergalactic aliens would opt to write in grain fields rather than public parks or on a piece of paper." This is where Randi chimes in with his thoughts that, "the irrefutable evidence, of course, is that crop circles are hoaxes, perpetrated by pranksters, artists and children." Predictably, Randi points to "the adventures of Doug Bower and Dave Chorley, who came forward in the early 1990s to admit they were behind the original crop circles that kicked off the craze in Britain." He seems to have conveniently forgotten that the crop circle phenomenon came to public attention in the last 1970s and botanical documents containing descriptions of such formations date back to the 1800s. This only covers the English speaking world so we have no idea how long such things may have existed in locations like China, South America or Africa.

It goes without saying that obviously hoaxes exist. We also know that human teams of people will go out into the fields and create this land-art for reasons not associated to hoaxing per-se. Whatever the driving force there seems to be a phenomenon within the phenomenon that makes us want to talk to each other in this manner. Now THAT'S weird!

But I digress. Apparently getting a skeptic to look at the evidence for genuine formations is a hard act to fulfill as David Guest, plant pathologist and agricultural scientist at the University of Sydney, proclaims there is no documented evidence to be found anywhere. Has Glass actually asked for this documentation or merely made a flying visit to the web site of BLT Research in Massachussetts, the worlds largest crop circle site that uses scientific methods to test plant samples. My guess is it was a quick visit followed by a declaration of debunking.

Honestly, after reading this feature which also explores the so-called "delusional" results of homeopathy and chiropractic manipulation, one wonders how long this magazine will remain in circulation when it's contents fly in the face of the public who are living better lives because of these modalities. But I digress.

Cosmos is obviously written by skeptics with a cause - or is it a vendetta? Either way skeptics need to realize that it is THEY who are the minority group here. As they have clearly demonstrated through their own behaviour, that their fragile psyche would be the first to crumble into a jibbering heap if ET did make open contact.

I don't know if they realize it but from my perspective skeptics appear to be stuck and unwilling to move forward in this great learning curve we call life. Their behaviour is dishonest, uncivil, discourteous, unhelpful and invalidating to others. It's as if they subconsciously realize this and lash out at others as a form of compensation. If they were honest enough to look deeply within themselves they might realize it is they who have isolated themselves from the greater tribe of humanity.
