I didn't see the UFO. Just heard about it. Damn! Missed it again. Oh well.
At least the local news actually reported on the sighting, which, since 9/11, it seems like very little local media reporting of sightings has been happening.

The news clip can't resist playing the required "I saw a flying saucer que the X-Files tape" music. But at least they encourage viewers to contact the station if future sightings occur.

Orange Orb above Lorane Highway, OR
At least more images are at the KVAL Facebook page. KVAL's station, by the way, is on top of a hill, and that is where I had my "orange orb" encounter -- complete with missing time -- so many years ago. (To be accurate, not on" the hill itself, but I first spotted the orange orb above the station at the hill from my vantage point which was down on the highway below.) Interesting comments from viewers and other witnesses who say they saw the same UFO, including the lame ones from people who "don't believe" or insist the lights were Chinese lanterns. Chinese lanterns that come together to form a triangle? Snort.
The best they could do in terms of debunking was contact the Science Factory, a science museum full of fun things for kids to explore. Quoting Sue Peterson, planetarium director:

"The city lights, which are kind of orange tinged, will reflect off of their stomachs," she said, "and you'll see that kind of orange, you know, in a V shape."
Have to giggle at the typo "plan" and for goodness sakes, doesn't anyone speak decent English anymore? "..."you know..."?" Then again, the news reporters, especially the women, dress like hostesses in a strip club. I don't know if they have hostesses in strip clubs (and I'm not against strip clubs, which some might find ironic) but there is such a thing as time and place. But I'm going off on a tangent. Focus, Regan, focus.
At least Peterson did make the quite reasonable statement that:
"A UFO means unidentified flying object," Peterson said. "It doesn't necessarily mean that it's little green men from another world."

Well, I just now received in the mail an "advance uncorrected proof" (in Word.doc form) copy of a forthcoming book titled "The Roswell Legacy: The Untold Story of the First Military Officer at the 1947 Crash Site", written by Jesse Marcel, Jr., and Linda Marcel, and with a foreword from Stan Friedman.
As the publisher tells me: "In his page-turning, thriller of a non-fiction book, Marcel, Jr. explains the government cover-up and the people involved; backs up his father's knowledge and expertise as an investigator; and portrays other frightening UFO sightings. He ends the book by describing his recent, hair-raising encounter with a high U.S. official who gives the author a glimpse into a Pandora's Box of covertly funded "black government" activities that include hiding the Roswell Incident."
The book isn't actually published until September, so I'm not sure why the publisher has sent me a copy now in Word form. But, hey, I'm not complaining! As soon as time allows, I will digest and review...

"The Spaceship Handbook" and "The Saucer Fleet" are complimentary works by Jack Hagerty and Jon Rogers and are both published through the ARA Press. "The Spaceship Handbook" provides information on theoretical, fictional, and real (but not developed) spacecraft and is an essential reference for spaceship modelers and general sci-fi spaceship fans. "The Saucer Fleet" features detailed information on famous flying saucers depicted on the big screen, television and print. Both works provide historical accounts, detailed drawings, plot summaries and the like. Some of this information is available on Jon's site, Rogers Rocketships.THE SPACESHIP HANDBOOKThis book provides almost 5 lbs of information on theoretical, fictional, and real (but not developed) spacecraft that is sure to please rocketeers, space enthusiasts, and amateur sci-fi historians alike. It documents 75 spacecraft and provides detailed drawings, historical backgrounds, plot summaries (for purely fictional craft), and mission backgrounds (for potentially real craft). Its hardbound, 8 1/2" x 11" x 1.25" cover houses 534 pages and over 500 graphics. You can see sample pages, drawings, and a complete outline here on ARA Press's site.ORGANIZATIONThe presentation of each spacecraft starts with a historical background. Where there are multiple craft from one source, this includes a section on the designer, and separate sections for each craft. These include photos, diagrams, artwork, and detailed, dimensioned drawings. The dimensioned drawings are basically the same format as those presented in "Rockets of the World", by Peter Always. There is a short 'Quickspec' for each, providing the type of vehicle, the year, the medium in which it was first documented, the designer, and the overall dimensions. The authors also provide brief modelers notes, which provide hints, suggestions and references to previous models. These are not plans (no reference to body tubes, nose cones, or balsa), and the main aide to the builder are the drawings. Finally, where the authors have opinions and/or want to present some related material, they include an epilog.The book is organized into three major sections and two appendices. The first section, entitled "The Theoreticians", covers works by early rocket scientists. The second section, "The Entertainers", moves from scientists who dreamed of spaceflight, to people whose goal it was to bring that dream to the rest of us. This is the largest of the sections. The third and final section, "The Real Stuff", presents modern conceptual vehicles. As with the first section, this is limited to vehicles that never made it into hardware. The media represented includes printed sources (comics, pulp fiction, and novels), radio, TV, and the big screen. The author says they stopped there because information on many of the popular spaceships since then (Star Trek, Star Wars, etc.) is already well documented in the modeling communities. The number of spaceships covered defies listing in this review and I refer the reader to the outline contained in the URL presented above. Some of the more familiar entries include Friede (from Die Frau Au Mond), Buck Rogers, the TinTin rocket, Gerry Andersons' Thunderbirds, ships from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Josie's Spaceship (from Josie and the Pussycats), and the Myst Island Rocket from the video game. There are even several entries by one G. Harry Stine, who also was also a sci-fi author! The one place this book let me down was that it didn't have plans for the Fireball XL-5, which is one of my favorite subjects. This omission was due to publishing deadlines and there is teaser about a future Volume 2."THE REAL STUFF"This section is dedicated to spacecraft from the late 1950's, 1960's and 1990's that never were realized in hardware. These include the X-20, NASA 6 F-1, Project Pluto, Manned Orbiting Laboratory, Lockheed-Martin's VentureStar, Kistler's K-1, Kelly's Astroliner, Pioneer's Pathfinder, and the Rotary Rocket Roton. One thing to note is that in earlier sections, the primary designer, author, or producer could be identified. By the 1950's, the work of rocket science was now dominated by the government and/or private companies with "armies of technical people". I would have liked to seen this section be a bit thicker. I hope that Volume 2 will include a section on the X-Prize contestants - at least those who don't eventually make it into space.APPENDICIESAppendix A, entitled "The Atomic Powered Spaceship: Yesterday's Dream, Spaceflight's Future?" is a paper on interplanetary space travel. Although the title sounds somewhat specific, this covers a wide range of topics and presents the results of a bit of number crunching buy the author. This paper includes: challenges in manned interplanetary space flight; a tutorial on how rockets work; the human factors of space flight; a methodology for comparing engine/propulsion options; a subsequent analysis of a wide variety of engines, from chemical to matter/anti-matter; the potential destinations within our solar system; and a description of what it will take to get to those destinations. Most of this paper is not very detailed or highly technical and should be of interest to those of our hobby.Appendix B. The Tribute to G. Harry is part biography and part a personal memoir by the author. The plans vary in detail, but should be sufficient for a scratch builder to replicate the four craft: Luna from Destination Moon, Thunderbirds 1 and 3, and the X-20 Dyna Soar/Titan IIIE. These plans were taken from 3rd parties and the proper credit is given.CONCLUSIONI am amazed at the quality and amount of material covered in this book. The book exceeded my expectations and even if I don't build a single model from this book, it will provide continuous inspiration for my future modeling activities. I would have liked to see the Fireball XL-5 and more 'real' spacecraft described, so I offer this a suggestion for a future Volume 2.I want to thank Jack Hagerty of ARA Press for the signed copy that he so generously donated to the EMRR NASROC and MonsterROC photo contest. I hear his stock is running short so you should hurry if you want a copy. I doubt if many owners will be wanting to give theirs up. Maybe if enough people contact him he'll consider reprinting it.THE SAUCER FLEET"The Saucer Fleet" is the latest release from Jack Hagerty and Jon Rogers of "Spaceship Handbook" fame. This 330 page hard-cover book features detailed information on famous flying saucers depicted on the big screen, television and print, including:* The Day the Earth Stood Still* War of the Worlds* This Island Earth* Forbidden Planet* Earth vs. The Flying Saucers* Lost in Space* The Invaders* plus some others.CONTENTSThe book can be viewed as an adjunct to "The Spaceship Handbook", which conspicuously omitted saucers. In his intro, Jack notes that these saucers don't exactly fit there, as they haven't contributed to the history of the spacecraft. But then, neither do items like the Josie's Spaceship (from Josie and the Pussycats), which was featured in "The Handbook". I for one think that they do have their place, even if only in my imagination, since the real world versions haven't panned out (for example, see my post on the Pye Wacket). Be that as it may, I think saucers are cool and am happy Jack and Jon gave us this book. (BTW, I liked Josie's Spaceship.)The presentation is similar to that in "The Handbook", including: a background section that sets the historical context; a summary of the story; a description of the subject vehicle including a detailed, dimensioned drawings; background on where the authors got their data; and, finally, an epilogue with the author's comments. The whole thing is packed with photos. New to this work, many of the drawings also provide interior details. There are some modeler's notes, but these are pretty much limited to the kits that have been produced.In his forward, Dr. Phil "Bad Astronomer" Plait says the book is a biography of these shows. It is that and more. To present that biography, the authors first delve into the history and sociology behind the UFO craze, which continues to this day. The saucers in the book were motivated by that phenomenon and undoubtedly did their part to fuel it on. I actually found this to be one of the more interesting aspects of the book. Note that this book is about flying saucers (known entities created by our imaginations) and not UFO's (unknown entities that may really exist, but whose origin is in dispute).The historical and story summaries were also interesting. One of the cool things was to see how these classics influenced later sci-fi works. There is even an occasional discussion about the real science behind the fictitious technology. I now know what a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is. And how much energy would be released if the strong force holding your atoms together was abruptly released. Cool, huh? It was also really neat to get a recap of features like I love like The Day the Earth Stood Still and Lost is Space. I'd like to see them again now that I have read the book.While the saucer descriptions and diagrams were the main thing I originally wanted from the book, they actually were a small part of the whole. There is not much material available on the saucers and what there is is usually inconsistent. The authors performed a lot of photogrammetry and often had to resort to supposition, and extrapolation. It's clear they really did their homework to dig out details about these ships. The results are the most detailed plans available on these saucers. (Actually, that statement may have some supposition on my part too.)The 'archeological' reports and and epilogues were of mixed interest to me. In general, the detailed analysis of the the interiors of these spacecraft were a bit much. The main benefit of this detail is twofold. First, detailed sci-fi modelers will understand what they are modeling second, scale modelers in general will understand how develop plans from photographic sources. The epilogues also went into more detail on the movies influence, both in terms of the story lines as well as the physical props.CONCLUSION:I found the book interesting, but mainly not in ways I had expected. I think that it will appeal mostly to sci-fi buffs and fans of the subject shows. The drawings will be useful to sci-fi modelers but many can be used for flying models as well. However, since ours fly upward instead of sideways, the non-symmetrical ones would be problematic. But if you want scale points for your saucer, the book will be very useful.While I really liked the read, this will have less influence on my building the "The Spaceship Handbook" and the latter is a better buy for the sport rocketeer. JUNE 07, 2013 - BELGIUM - A UFO orb was seen in the skies over Antwerp, Belgium. This was recorded on the 5th of June, 2013.
EYE-WITNESS REPORT:
I opened my window and saw a very bright white orb heading my direction. I ran to the opposite window, grabbed my camera and waited until it passed over my house to film it.
I filmed it with a little photo-camera and only zoomed in a little bit to keep some video quality. I have enhanced the video by zooming in a bit and slowing down some parts.

I saw a UFO do the same maneuver in broad daylight for 3 seconds. It looked like a triangular craft, (like a upright pyramid, more like an inverted cone) Then it dematerialized. What was so cool was the way it disappeared was like a fade effect. The outline was visible for a second. I think it was silver, it flanged out on the bottom of the cone shape. The sighting was above the Calgary airport about 15 - 20 days ago, so in mid June. I can't really judge the height, but above the horizon and under the clouds. I'm looking for anyone that is searching for information on this phenomenon or related things.

Second sighting, April.10, 2008 at approx: 10ish I decided to tell my neighbor about what we saw the night before, she kind of laughs and says really? So I go on to my balcony to smoke. I look up thinking about what I saw the night before and thought what are the chances of seeing such a thing again. Oh my god ! I look straight up and sure enough I see 2 bright star like objects shoot across the sky above me and disappear. I look to the right of my balcony and hovering just above is a cluster of approx: 9-12 orb like lights moving slowly, almost in a floating motion. I quickly call my neighbor via telephone, told her to hurry and come over here. I'm seeing them again, she runs in and can't believe her eyes. They moved west bound like the night before and just disappeared. My neighbor found your site and I decided to contact you. What on earth were we seeing?

Close encounters with Barbara Bartholic usually sparked the same reaction.
"She always left you laughing. She had this marvelous sense of humor," her sister, Catha Block, said.
"Barbara just had this way of making people feel important - like you were the only person in the world."
One out-of-this-world topic was no laughing matter, though, to the Tulsa artist and art gallery owner.
Bartholic had been fascinated for years by the possibility of extraterrestrial life, and in the 1970s, the subject consumed her.
Bartholic's subsequent field research into UFOs led to writing and speaking engagements. It wasn't long before she became a respected UFO authority worldwide.
One of the consultants on the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," she later wrote about her experiences in the book "Barbara: The Story of a UFO Investigator."
Barbara Simon Bartholic died Nov. 10 after suffering a stroke. She was 71.
A service is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel under the direction of Add'Vantage Funeral Service.
"Barbara really perceived a world that's larger than the one we live in," Block said, adding that she was never embarrassed by her sister's devotion to a subject that often draws stares.
"We were a free-thinking bunch and were open to the idea," she said.
"And it was so fascinating. It was like going out of your universe into another one. If I was able, I'd love to carry on her
work."
Bartholic, who moved to Tulsa from St. Louis, Mo., as a child, started out in an entirely different line of work - just one of many over her life.
Her mother, Tulsan Alice Simon, was a fashion model when she was younger. So was her mother before her.
Bartholic carried on the family tradition, starting at age 17. Her modeling took her to Los Angeles and New York City, where she worked with well-known fashion designers.
After she married Tulsa artist Bob Bartholic, she decided to move on.
A painter herself who excelled in oils, she and Bob became leading figures in the Tulsa art scene and ran two downtown art galleries in the 1970s.
Barbara Bartholic also hosted her own television show, "Arts Arena," on a local cable channel. She interviewed Tulsa-area artists, but it wasn't a conventional talk show, her sister said.
"She was very inventive and avant-garde," Block said.
Bartholic's other interests began to take a back seat to her obsession with UFOs.
For several years, she worked closely with friend and fellow UFO investigator Jacque F. Vallee, a French astronomer who inspired the "Close Encounters" character of Claude Lacombe, played by French film director Francois Truffaut.
Bartholic interviewed alleged alien abductees and looked into reported sightings of UFOs around the country. After nearly 40 years, she was convinced, her sister says, that we are not alone.
Block added that Bartholic had been working recently on a documentary film on the subject.
She is survived by four children, Braden Bartholic, Mandy Wilson, Catha Clark and Becky Bartholic; her mother, Alice Simon; one sister, Catha Block; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Is truth stranger than conspiracy-theory fiction? A new book on Area 51 that's already generating a ton of buzz says there was no alien spacecraft that crashed in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. Instead, Stalin did it--maybe.
According to Annie Jacobsen, the reporter who authored "Area 51," the spaceship was actually a Soviet spy plane that came down during a storm. Jacobsen claims it was filled with bizarre-looking, genetically engineered child-sized pilots. Then-Soviet leader Joseph Stalin was hoping, Jacobsen alleges, that the news would cause widespread panic in the U.S.
The story gets even stranger: The leader of the USSR had apparently been inspired by the 1938 radio adaptation of the HG Wells story "War of the Worlds," produced by Orson Welles. The broadcast triggered panic in some listeners who tuned in and mistook it for a real-life alien invasion. (Though later students of the episode claim that the media of Welles' day vastly exaggerated the scale of public alarm over the broadcast.)
And those ET-looking aviators? They were scientific experiments created by the "Angel of Death," Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, for the USSR after the war. The flight was piloted remotely, according to accounts in the book, and was filled with a crew of "alien-like children."
According to Jacobsen's source, a retired engineer who was put on the project in 1978, the look of the human experiments could explain the alien conspiracy theories: "They were grotesquely deformed, but each in the same manner as the others. They had unusually large heads and abnormally shaped oversize eyes."
Is any of this true? There's no way to prove it. Documents surrounding the Roswell incident are still classified--as is virtually all information related to the mystery spot.
Still, lack of proof hasn't exactly stopped the book from sparking speculation on the media circuit and on the Web. In the last day, Yahoo! searches skyrocketed 3,000 percent for "area 51 book." And the tome is penned not by a crackpot conspirator, but a respected journalist.
Even the New York Times gives her credence, writing in its review: "Although this connect-the-dots UFO thesis is only a hasty-sounding addendum to an otherwise straightforward investigative book about aviation and military history, it makes an indelible impression. 'Area 51' is liable to become best known for sci-fi provocation."
But sci-fi provocation may be all the book generates. After all, without the government coming out and saying what happened back in 1947, even if there was no conspiracy, the stories of the "Roswell Incident" will remain just that.
