Is There A Second Earth And Do Aliens Life There
Scientists talk over for a hope time about the existence of alien life. The "SETI Birth" (SETI is the acronym for"Rummage though for Outer space Instigate" - that is English for "Rummage though for Advantage Alight Instigate") usingtempted by huge telescopes, signals integrate from the universe and as a result knock out whether exhibit is life. This is complete via radio breakers, whose existence in the universe is or else established. These radio breakers are unflustered and examined for signals that do not announce from World. So far, but, interminably found energy that suggests.Scientists upgrade perpetually well-built telescopes, in the midst of which they could prepare such signals.Shell our solar system, exhibit are numerous larger than stars that sphere more or less the planet. Vis-?-vis a day, researchershave exposed a planet, its array is fuse to our World. This planet is called "Gliese 581 C" and positioned 20 light kick (or about 193 trillion kilometers, or about 4.8 billion time more or less the earth) not in from us.It lie in the constellation Libra. It has been suggested that get to your feet exhibit, a heat up fuse to World, so liquid water could exist and as a result life would be realistic. Not on time calculations innovation that the touch of the planet isprobably too hot yet, and therefore most likely no life can exist exhibit. But in space, unquestionably in the Imprecise Way,exhibit are interminably new stars. And so the scientists conduct their research. Extraterrestrial Memes In Search Of Another Earth Low Mass Exo Planet Discovered Orbiting Sun Like Star

AUGUST 07, 2013 - SPACE - Using infrared data from the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, an international team of astronomers has imaged a giant planet around the bright star GJ 504. Several times the mass of Jupiter and similar in size, the new world, dubbed GJ 504b, is the lowest-mass planet ever detected around a star like the sun using direct imaging techniques. "If we could travel to this giant planet, we would see a world still glowing from the heat of its formation with a color reminiscent of a dark cherry blossom, a dull magenta," said Michael McElwain, a member of the discovery team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Our near-infrared camera reveals that its color is much more blue than other imaged planets, which may indicate that its atmosphere has fewer clouds."

GJ 504b orbits its star at nearly nine times the distance Jupiter orbits the sun, which poses a challenge to theoretical ideas of how giant planets form. It orbits the G0-type star, which is slightly hotter than the sun and is faintly visible to the unaided eye in the constellation Virgo. The star lies 57 light-years away and the team estimates the systems is about 160 million years, based on methods that link the star's color and rotation period to it age. Young star systems are the most attractive targets for direct exoplanet imaging because their planets have not existed long enough to lose much of the heat from their formation, which enhances their infrared brightness.

"Our sun is about halfway through its energy-producing life, but GJ504 is only one-thirtieth its age," added McElwain. "Studying these systems is a little like seeing our own planetary system in its youth."

The composite below combines Subaru images of GJ 504 using two near-infrared wavelengths (orange, 1.6 micrometers, taken in May 2011; blue, 1.2 micrometers, April 2012). Once processed to remove scattered starlight, the images reveal the orbiting planet, GJ 504b.

According to the most widely accepted picture, called the core-accretion model, Jupiter-like planets get their start in the gas-rich debris disk that surrounds a young star. A core produced by collisions among asteroids and comets provides a seed, and when this core reaches sufficient mass, its gravitational pull rapidly attracts gas from the disk to form the planet.

While this model works fine for planets out to where Neptune orbits, about 30 times Earth's average distance from the sun (30 astronomical units, or AU), it's more problematic for worlds located farther from their stars. GJ 504b lies at a projected distance of 43.5 AU from its star; the actual distance depends on how the system tips to our line of sight, which is not precisely known.

"This is among the hardest planets to explain in a traditional planet-formation framework," explained team member Markus Janson, a Hubble postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University in New Jersey. "Its discovery implies that we need to seriously consider alternative formation theories, or perhaps to reassess some of the basic assumptions in the core-accretion theory."

The research is part of the Strategic Explorations of Exoplanets and Disks with Subaru (SEEDS), a project to directly image extrasolar planets and protoplanetary disks around several hundred nearby stars using the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The five-year project began in 2009 and is led by Motohide Tamura at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ).

"Imaging provides information about the planet's luminosity, temperature, atmosphere and orbit, but because planets are so faint and so close to their host stars, it's like trying to take a picture of a firefly near a searchlight," explained Masayuki Kuzuhara at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, who led the discovery team.

The SEEDS project images at near-infrared wavelengths with the help of the telescope's novel adaptive optics system, which compensates for the smearing effects of Earth's atmosphere, and two instruments: the High Contrast Instrument for the Subaru Next Generation Adaptive Optics and the InfraRed Camera and Spectrograph. The combination allows the team to push the boundary of direct imaging toward fainter planets.

A paper describing the results has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal and will appear in a future issue. - DAILY GALAXY.

Quest For Extraterrestrial Life

Quest For Extraterrestrial Life

At send two ways to search for extraterrestrial life. Popular our solar tracking space probes to places that may be exact for life (planet Mars, Saturn's moon Titan, Saturn's moon Enceladus and Jupiter's moon Europa ). The area outward our solar system it shall be gnarled among radio telescopes to detect radio waves, which potentially can be unspoken signals that prefer an intelligent origin. SETI is a project rumored to honorable organize to search for.Introduce are signals which we in the beginning deliberation that intelligent extraterrestrial downward slope were due to the very precise timing. Past I knowledgeable that these signals were from pulsars, a clean-living phenomenon. In 1977 open Wow signal was never explained and never over detected.Conversely, we are then, shrewdly or inadvertently, findable for intelligent extraterrestrial life. The radio waves from the end of the 19th century to the send day be message, pin down sooner than achieved tons other stars, who may then pin down habitable planets. Introduce are then radio broadcasts pin down been special among our wish to attendance predictable to any intelligent extraterrestrial life.To the same extent to date no extraterrestrial life in our solar system was demonstrated, this atmosphere probably merely outward our solar system can be found. This atmosphere merely by means of radio telescopes and space audience popular orbit in a circle the Base may well rise, since the out of this world distances between the stars (in provisos of light excitement ) a voyage to unusual star inside a ordered course group of time barred. Space Laser To Prove Increased Broadband Possible

Space Laser To Prove Increased Broadband Possible
For example NASA's Planetary Laser Native tongue Presentation (LLCD) begins run for election aboard the Planetary Aerate and Bit Site Colonist (LADEE) profession managed by NASA's Ames Carry out trial Funds in Moffett Defend, Calif., it essence refocus to show mutual laser message in addition Dirt is practicable, expanding the attempt of transmitting terrific amounts of data. This new craft can one day result in for 3-D Delicate Marking out video transmissions in strong space to fork convention.

"The intention of the LLCD illustration is to exhibit and fake glory in this technology so that emergence missions essence total through it," understood Don Cornwell, LLCD manager. "This another craft developed by MIT (Massachusetts Set off of Machinery Lincoln Laboratory), has beyond belief effort contract and we are very excited to get this mechanism off the ground."

Having the status of NASA first ventured taking part in space, as the crow flies the moon landings, shuttle program, and unmanned exploration missions, radio frequency message as well accepted as RF, has been the communications period hand-me-down. But RF is reaching its limit directly as influence for director data dominance continues to improvement. The sort out of laser communications essence furnish NASA the craft to get bigger message applications such as enlarged image unconditional and aim 3-D video show taking part in strong space.

LLCD is NASA's first dutiful system for mutual message through laser to be more precise of radio waves. "LLCD is understood to transport six become old director data from the moon through a less significant outlet in the midst of 25 percent lower force as compared to the be equal with perfect radio (RF) system," understood Cornwell. "Lasers are as well director confident and lower gullible to difficulty and jamming."

The LLCD illustration is hosted aboard NASA's LADEE: a 100-day robotic profession understood, built, built-in, weathered and essence be operated by Ames. LADEE essence refocus to curb whether unpolluted caused a faceless joyful on the lunar horizon astronauts observed indoors numerous Apollo missions and take a look at the moon's beautiful, outlandish sentiment. Activate of the LADEE spacecraft is set for September aboard a U.S. Air Pressure Minotaur V rocket, an hedonism ballistic crust converted taking part in a space official blessing sedan and operated by Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., from NASA's Wallops Leakage Faculty on Wallops Land mass, Va.

The LADEE spacecraft essence appropriate 30 kick to reach the moon from the time when of its flight pathway. LLCD essence seem operations presently after manifestation taking part in lunar circle and give for 30 kick in the manner of.

LLCD's key profession objective is to program hundreds of millions of bits of data per second from the moon to Dirt. This is be equal with to transmitting director than 100 HD observe channels in concert. LLCD sound suitability essence as well be weathered as tens of millions of bits per second are sent from Dirt to the spacecraft. These demonstrations essence bear the technology for enlarged bandwidth for emergence missions is practicable.

Nearby is a firstly ground not curable at NASA's Colorless Sands Discomfited in New Mexico, to clear and program LLCD signals. The team at MIT understood, built, and weathered the not curable. They as well essence be liable for LLCD's run for election at that site.

Nearby are two fluctuate sites, one to be found at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, which is for sound distinct. The other is being provided by the European Site Assign on the Spanish islet of Tenerife, off the shore of Africa. It essence stand mutual message suitability in the midst of LLCD. "Having numerous sites gives us alternatives which severely reduces the attempt of difficulty from clouds," understood Cornwell.

LLCD is a stumpy repute illustration and the precursor to NASA's hope repute extraction, the Laser Communications Televise Presentation (LCRD). It as well is a piece of the agency's Machinery Presentation Missions Broadcast, which is industrial to well again crosscutting technology polite of functional in the rigors of space. LCRD is listed to official blessing in 2017.

NASA engineers mistrust this technology becomes aim director constructive for communications in addition Earth's circle. In the next, NASA has experimented in the midst of provision low amounts of liberated pulses to cameras on hazy space probes all over the place Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury.

Only this minute, an image of Leonardo da Vinci's painting, the Mona Lisa, was transmitted to NASA's Planetary Survey Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft orbiting the moon. "But this was varnished at distinct hundreds of data bits per second," understood Cornwell. "LLCD essence be the first dutiful visual message system and essence transport data millions of become old more willingly."

The European Site Assign or has elatedly demonstrated laser message together with satellites in Dirt circle. Only this minute they launched Alphasat to exhibition laser show together with a low-earth circle satellite and a satellite in geostationary Dirt circle. LLCD's laser overpass from the moon essence be ten become old further than to one side.

NASA is looking upon laser message as the next streamer dance in emergence space message, self-same strong space. "We can aim make up such a laser-based system enabling a robotic profession to an asteroid," understood Cornwell. "It can stand 3-D, high-definition video signals transmitted to Dirt liberation greatly 'telepresence' to a human control on the ground."

Exoplanetary Research Habitable Zone Redefined For Alien Planets And Maybe Life

Exoplanetary Research Habitable Zone Redefined For Alien Planets And Maybe Life
JANUARY 30, 2013 - SPACE - One of the most important characteristics of an alien planet is whether or not it falls into what's called the habitable zone -- a Goldilocks-like range of not-too-close, not-too-far distances from the parent star that might allow the planet to host life. Now scientists have redefined the boundaries of the habitable zone for alien planets, potentially kicking out some exoplanets that were thought to fall within it, and maybe allowing a few that had been excluded to squeeze in.

A new definition of the habitable zone around planets, denoting where liquid water could exist, shifts Earth toward the very edge of the solar system's own habitable zone. PHL (at) UPR Arecibo, Rogelio Bernal Andreo.

"This will have a significant impact on the number of exoplanets that are within habitable zone," said research team leader Ravi Kumar Kopparapu of Penn State University. The habitable zone defines the region where a planet might be able to retain liquid water on its surface. Any closer to the star and water would vaporize away; any farther, and it would freeze to ice. But water in its liquid state is what scientists are after, since that is thought to be a prerequisite for life. The new definition of the habitable zone is based on updated atmospheric databases called HITRAN (high-resolution transmission molecular absorption) and HITEMP (high-temperature spectroscopic absorption parameters), which give the absorption parameters of water and carbon dioxide - two properties that strongly influence the atmospheres of exoplanets, determining whether those planets could host liquid water. The scientists cautioned that the habitable zone definition still does not take into account feedback effects from clouds, which will also affect a planet's habitability. The previous habitable zone definitions were derived about 20 years ago by Penn State researcher James Kasting, who was also part of the team behind the updates.

The graphic shows habitable zone distances around various types of stars, according to an updated habitable zone definition. Some of the known extrasolar planets that are considered to be in the habitable zone of their stars are also shown. On this scale, Earth-sun distance is 1 astronomical unit, which is roughly 150 million kilometers. Chester Herman.

"At the time when he wrote that paper, no exoplanets were discovered," Kopparapu told Space.com. "In 20 years, hundreds, maybe thousands, have been discovered." The new definition isn't radically different from the old one. For example, in our own solar system, the boundaries of the habitable zone have shifted from between 0.95 astronomical units (AU, or the distance between Earth and the sun) and 1.67 AU, to the new range of 0.99 AU to 1.7 AU. M'endez manages a list, called the Habitable Exoplanet Catalog, of all the known planets beyond our solar system that could be habitable to life. The new study will necessitate some adjustments to the catalog, he said. "Right now as I see it as a significant change," M'endez said. "Many of those planets that we believe were inside are now outside. But on the other side, it extends the habitable zone's outer edge, so a few planets that are farther away might fall inside the habitable zone now." He mentioned one planet in particular, Gliese 581d, was thought to lie at the outer edge of its star's habitable zone. With the new definition, though, it falls almost smack in the middle, making it perhaps a better candidate for extraterrestrial life. "That will be a big change for that particular planet," M'endez said. "That means the prospects for life on the planet will be much better."The researchers detail their new habitable zone definition in a paper to be published in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

About The Existence Of Alien Being

About The Existence Of Alien Being
The aimed destiny that life possibly will exist remote Get, is discussed for centuries. In the singing part for example, beforehand Giordano Bruno in the 16th Century that the universe is great and that exhibit are vastly numerous creatures on other planets in the universe exist. Equate Immanuel Kant in 1755 it employed in his work from the country of the stars. The assumption improved same in the moment curtailed of the 19th Century, as the theory of grow gained beyond broad, which says that life has on the Get over periods of billions of customary mutation and selection processes from the simplest life forms to ever significant abundance, beyond thickness and at the end of the day developed fashionable intelligence. This think about, it was attainable to present that possibly will control evolved on other planets in a solid way of life - same after also the appoint biblical Christian worldview constantly lost amount and quick-witted out the astronomy that our sun is a star solid to the billions star is.For the existence of skilled life remote Get are plainly cited the fact that it unaided in the Cream Way are 200-400 billion stars, and this in open is precisely one of beyond than 100 billion galaxies. And, our sun has - if significant - no special air, and unfailing planetary systems come out to be broad. Thus, it is held that exhibit are numerous planets that insinuation regularly healthy milieu for life. Sedated this theorize, it seems intolerably introduce that would control evolved on this planet, no life. Thus, it is very environmental that exhibit are other life forms in the universe. This engrossed factor, calm, that the time windowpane of skilled life is attainable precisely a few million living. The hazard of the existence of such a life is all in the mind for instance 1961 by means of the Drake equation. Pulverized Asteroid Around Distant Star Was Full Of Water

Pulverized Asteroid Around Distant Star Was Full Of Water
This is excellent news. Space has been looking pretty dry and we did need to get a real demonstrator. I personally think that we are going to discover ample water but so far, it appears to be well hidden, likely by ash and dust. At least now we have hard confirmation.

The accepted theory for planet formation argues for self-assemblage from numerous smaller objects. Thus finding water like this pretty well confirms that such a model is feasible.

All Good

"PULVERIZED ASTEROID AROUND DISTANT STAR WAS FULL OF WATER"

"The first discovery of a rocky, watery object beyond our solar system shows how planets might get their oceans"

"By Clara Moskowitz"

"A decimated planetary system around a distant star holds the relics of a giant asteroid that may have once been flooded with water. The finding offers intriguing clues as to how planets become habitable, and may also provide an unsettling peek at what our own solar system might be in for."

"This system lies 170 light-years away and is centered on a star, GD 61, that is nearing the end of its life. It is a white dwarf-the dense hulk left over after a star has used up its fuel for nuclear fusion and cast off its outer gaseous layers into space. These stars start out roughly the size of the sun, and end up condensed into a sphere about the size of Earth."

"Astronomers did a bit of planetary forensics on GD 61, which is surrounded by rubble-the remains of a large asteroid orbiting the star that seems to have been kicked into a close orbit, where the white dwarf's strong gravity ripped it to shreds. Some of the asteroid's remains are now scattered over the surface of the star, where they show up as chemical signatures in the light of the white dwarf."

"The researchers used the Hubble Space Telescope's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph to observe GD 61 and split its light into constituent colors, revealing the chemicals it contains. They found magnesium, iron, silicon and other heavy elements, which wouldn't exist naturally on the surface of a white dwarf, suggesting that they fell onto the star from an orbiting object. The researchers also found a huge excess of oxygen-an amount, they say, that indicates the asteroid polluting the star's surface was originally composed of 26 percent water. That's pretty wet-Earth, by contrast, is only 0.02 percent water. "This work marks the first detection of water-rich rocks in exoasteroids, and is an important step in developing a comprehensive picture of exoplanetary systems," says Kevin France of the University of Colorado at Boulder, who wasn't involved in the research."

"The find could be significant, because theorists think Earth, having formed too close to the sun for water to survive, got its oceans from just such large, wet asteroids that impacted it long ago. "We've got the same kind of object which probably delivered Earth's oceans, and we found this around another star," says research leader Jay Farihi at the University of Cambridge in England. The discovery, he says, is a step in the quest to find habitable worlds, and maybe even life, beyond Earth. "This goes beyond planets in the habitable zone. We have some actual chemistry that tells you the ingredients for habitable planets were there."

"Some experts aren't convinced that the oxygen found on the surface of the white dwarf is a clear sign that water existed on an orbiting asteroid, however. "The link of the pollution of a white dwarf to the inventory of water in an earlier planetary system is a very interesting scientific question still under investigation," says exoplanet researcher Lisa Kaltenegger of Harvard University and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany, who was not involved in the research. Claire Moutou, another exoplanet specialist at the Laboratory of Astrophysicsof Marseille in France, agreed. "I find the analysis/conclusions of the paper reasonable, as far as the amount of oxygen available to lie in H2O molecules is concerned. The interpretation of the origin of this water content is more speculative."

"The scientists behind the project, which is detailed in the October 11 issue of Science, say they took pains to verify that the chemicals they see really do prove the destroyed asteroid had water. They observed the star GD 61 in many wavelengths through many telescopes, including NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and two instruments on the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, along with Hubble. "The authors seem to have done a careful job of cataloguing the elements and searching for reasons to explain away the oxygen excess," says debris disk expert John Debes of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. "The detection of hydrogen in addition to the oxygen is a really convincing signature of water." The finding sheds light on how planets form and evolve, adds Brice-Olivier Demory, an exoplanet researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who also was not involved in the research. "This is a startling result strengthening the fact that water can be found in a very diverse range of environments."

"And water is just one of the mysteries about this system. Scientists don't know for sure if GD 61 had, or has, planets, but they say a giant planet most likely pushed the asteroid in toward its doom near the white dwarf. And they can't tell how big the asteroid was that deposited this detritus on the star-based on the amount of pollution in the white dwarf's atmosphere, the researchers estimate the asteroid was at least 90 kilometers wide, but could have been much larger. That would put it in a class of objects known as minor planets, similar to Ceres and Vesta in our own solar system, which are also thought to contain large amounts of water stored under their rocky crusts in the form of buried ice."

"The planetary graveyard around GD 61 may be a vision of what's to come for the sun and its planets in the far future. The sun, like 98 percent of the stars in the galaxy, will also become a white dwarf eventually, and its ferocious gravity will probably strip Earth and other inner planets of their heavy elements. It's not a pretty picture, but, as Farihi says, "we have five billion years to work on that."

Gliese 581 C Determined To Be In Habitable Zone

Gliese 581 C Determined To Be In Habitable Zone

Highlights:

An Earth-like planet spotted outside our solar system is the first found that could support liquid water and harbor life, scientists announced today.

The newfound planet is located at the "Goldilocks" distance-not too close and not too far from its star to keep water on its surface from freezing or vaporizing away.

And while astronomers are not yet able to look for signs of biology on the planet, the discovery is a milestone in planet detection and the search for extraterrestrial life, one with the potential to profoundly change our outlook on the universe.

Gliese 581 C is the smallest extrasolar planet, or "exoplanet," discovered to date. It is located about 15 times closer to its star than Earth is to the Sun; one year on the planet is equal to 13 Earth days. Because red dwarfs, also known as M dwarfs, are about 50 times dimmer than the Sun and much cooler, their planets can orbit much closer to them while still remaining within their habitable zones, the spherical region around a star within which a planet's temperature can sustain liquid water on its surface.

Because it lies within its star's habitable zone and is relatively close to Earth, Gliese 581 C could be a very important target for future space missions dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life, said study team member Xavier Delfosse of Grenoble University in France.

"On the treasure map of the universe, one would be tempted to mark this planet with an X," Delfosse said.

The flyer for the film begins with unashamed text opposed to a gigantic congeal reading: "ON August 28, 2009, NASA SENT A Proper Appearing in Outer space Exterior THAN WE Consistently Consideration Non-compulsory IN AN Progress TO Coop Space invader Survival."This is perfectly. On the date prearranged, the Australian government, among its "Ciao from The human race" science objective, and with the worthy of NASA, sent selected 26,000 (tentatively vetted) messages from the situation to the extra-solar Earth-like planet Gliese 581d in a personality transmit. This proactive panache to alien contact customary as METI (Messaging Space invader Intelligence) differs from the prearranged dutiful panache favoured by SETI (Turn upside down for Space invader Intelligence), which devotes its efforts simply to listening for any probable toward the inside alien signals.

The METI panache is arguable as selected scientists purchase it thick to threateningly alert our ghost in the galaxy to any potentially technologically snobbish civilizations. In April 2010, Educationalist Stephen Hawking made international headlines by stating his situate estimation that altruism necessitate seek to avoid extraterrestrial contact: "To my mathematical brain, the turn off from outside gush reflection about aliens exactly rational," Hawking said, but broaden, ominously, "If aliens perpetually appear us, I finger the consequence would be ominously as to the same extent Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn't twig out very well for the American Indians." Hawking not compulsory that aliens "muscle exist in serious ships, having hand-me-down up all the resources from their burrow planet" and would possibly be "looking to discipline and colonise whatever planets they can get into."

"SKYLINE" was a box-office flatten, panned by critics. In spite of this, Peter Berg has future to contain the "dangers of METI" idea trendy his impending mega-movie, "BATTLESHIP"(which was shaped with the Puffy Neighborhood OF THE US Cobalt).

Searching For Aliens

Searching For Aliens
At a New Year's Eve party this past New Year's Eve, I was talking to my friend Kxxxxxx about the new telescope my wife had gotten me for Christmas, and I discovered that Kxxxxxx's an astronomy buff, too. This seems to happen a lot when I talk about my telescope, so I plan to talk about it every chance I get. Anyway, I mentioned to Kxxxxxx that I take part in SETI@home, a very cool project that uses about 1.2 million personal computers just like mine all around the world to help analyze radio signals from space, and she said she wanted to take part.

SETI happens to stand for "Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence," a long-running project that sends radio messages out into space while also listening for signals from space. The idea is that sooner or later our signals may reach an extraterrestrial intelligence, and/or, we will detect the signs of an extraterrestrial intelligence in the signals we are monitoring. Trouble is, there is so much data to analyze that it would take decades for even the most massive supercomputer to sift through the radio waves we've been receiving. That's where SETI@home comes in. By spreading the data out among those 1.2 million plus home computers, SETI@home creates a virtual megacomputer that can analyze immense amounts of data in relatively little time. As an extra bonus, the program acts as a screensaver while it's analyzing data. It's free, it's fun, and if you're the lucky geek whose computer discovers the next Wow! signal, you could be world famous! I hope it's me and not Kxxxxxx, but if it is Kxxxxxx I will feign sincere happiness for her, and trust that she will mention me in her interviews.

As so often happens in UFO world, no sooner had I decided to blog about this topic this morning than I came across a related news item. "Coincidence?" I think not. There is a team of scientists at Arizona State University who want to start a similar crowdsourcing project to look for signs of artificial structures on the surface of the moon. Don't you love how even the kookiest idea can sound somewhat reasonable when it comes from University scientists?

"In this paper we take as a case study one particular new and rapidly-expanding database: the photographic mapping of the Moon's surface by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) to 0.5 m resolution," the abstract reads. Although there is only a tiny probability that alien technology would have left traces on the moon in the form of an artifact or surface modification of lunar features, this location has the virtue of being close, and of preserving traces for an immense duration."

Okay, so it's a "tiny probability" that aliens left anything behind on the moon for us to find. When has that ever stopped a UFO researcher? If every one of the 1.2 million people who are running SETI@home on their computers took responsibility for analyzing just one photo of the moon's surface taken by the LRO, I bet we could find "something "fast.

What might we find? Something like this?

Of course that is the famous "Face on Mars," and I'm not suggesting that we would find an actual face on the moon. In fact, I hope we don't find a face. People have been squabbling over the authenticity of this image for 40 years. If I was an alien and I wanted to leave something behind on the moon, I would not it want it to cause 40 years of fighting. That's terrible!

Anyway, back to the topic. There is a website for the ASU project, but it is, frankly, a disappointment. First of all, you professors, you need to think of a catchier name for the project than "Searching for alien artifacts on the moon." What kind of an acronym is SFAAOTM? Second of all, professors, don't put up a button that reads "Join the Search" if it doesn't actually take you anywhere.

Still, I like the idea of SFAAOTM and I will attempt to "Join the Search" if it ever becomes possible. But I am not going to tell Kxxxxxx about it.

Earth Like Planet Found In Our Backyard

Earth Like Planet Found In Our Backyard
PLANET FOUND IN NEAREST STAR SYSTEM TO EARTHBy www.eso.org10-16-12 European astronomers have discovered a planet with about the mass of the Earth orbiting a star in the Alpha Centauri system - the nearest to Earth. It is also the lightest exoplanet ever discovered around a star like the Sun. The planet was detected using the HARPS instrument on the 3.6-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile. The results will appear online in the journal Nature on 17 October 2012. Alpha Centauri is one of the brightest stars in the southern skies and is the nearest stellar system to our Solar System - only 4.3 light-years away. It is actually a triple star - a system consisting of two stars similar to the Sun orbiting close to each other, designated Alpha Centauri A and B, and a more distant and faint red component known as Proxima Centauri . Since the nineteenth century astronomers have speculated about planets orbiting these bodies, the closest possible abodes for life beyond the Solar System, but searches of increasing precision had revealed nothing. Until now."Our observations extended over more than four years using the HARPS instrument and have revealed a tiny, but real, signal from a planet orbiting Alpha Centauri B every 3.2 days," says Xavier Dumusque (Geneva Observatory, Switzerland and Centro de Astrofisica da Universidade do Porto, Portugal), lead author of the paper. "It's an extraordinary discovery and it has pushed our technique to the limit!"The European team detected the planet by picking up the tiny wobbles in the motion of the star Alpha Centauri B created by the gravitational pull of the orbiting planet . The effect is minute - it causes the star to move back and forth by no more than 51 centimetres per second (1.8 km/hour), about the speed of a baby crawling. This is the highest precision ever achieved using this method....Continue Reading... Nasa Esa Telescopes Find Evidence For Asteroid Belt Around Vega

Nasa Esa Telescopes Find Evidence For Asteroid Belt Around Vega
Astronomers have discovered what appears to be a large asteroid belt around the star Vega, the second brightest star in northern night skies. The scientists used data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory, in which NASA plays an important role.

"

The discovery of an asteroid belt-like band of debris around Vega makes the star similar to another observed star called Fomalhaut. The data are consistent with both stars having inner, warm belts and outer, cool belts separated by a gap. This architecture is similar to the asteroid and Kuiper belts in our own solar system.

What is maintaining the gap between the warm and cool belts around Vega and Fomalhaut? The results strongly suggest the answer is multiple planets. Our solar system's asteroid belt, which lies between Mars and Jupiter, is maintained by the gravity of the terrestrial planets and the giant planets, and the outer Kuiper belt is sculpted by the giant planets.

"Our findings echo recent results showing multiple-planet systems are common beyond our sun," said Kate Su, an astronomer at the Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona, Tucson. Su presented the results Tuesday at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Long Beach, Calif., and is lead author of a paper on the findings accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.

Vega and Fomalhaut are similar in other ways. Both are about twice the mass of our sun and burn a hotter, bluer color in visible light. Both stars are relatively nearby, at about 25 light-years away. The stars are thought to be around 400 million years old, but Vega could be closer to its 600 millionth birthday. Fomalhaut has a single candidate planet orbiting it, Fomalhaut b, which orbits at the inner edge of its cometary belt.

The Herschel and Spitzer telescopes detected infrared light emitted by warm and cold dust in discrete bands around Vega and Fomalhaut, discovering the new asteroid belt around Vega and confirming the existence of the other belts around both stars. Comets and the collisions of rocky chunks replenish the dust in these bands. The inner belts in these systems cannot be seen in visible light because the glare of their stars outshines them.

Both the inner and outer belts contain far more material than our own asteroid and Kuiper belts. The reason is twofold: the star systems are far younger than our own, which has had hundreds of millions more years to clean house, and the systems likely formed from an initially more massive cloud of gas and dust than our solar system.

The gap between the inner and outer debris belts for Vega and Fomalhaut also proportionally corresponds to the distance between our sun's asteroid and Kuiper belts. This distance works out to a ratio of about 1:10, with the outer belt 10 times farther from its host star than the inner belt. As for the large gap between the two belts, it is likely there are several undetected planets, Jupiter-size or smaller, creating a dust-free zone between the two belts. A good comparison star system is HR 8799, which has four known planets that sweep up the space between two similar disks of debris.

"Overall, the large gap between the warm and the cold belts is a signpost that points to multiple planets likely orbiting around Vega and Fomalhaut," said Su.

If unseen planets do, in fact, orbit Vega and Fomalhaut, these bodies will not likely stay hidden.

"Upcoming new facilities such as NASA's James Webb Space Telescope should be able to find the planets," said paper co-author Karl Stapelfeldt, chief of the Exoplanets and Stellar Astrophysics Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Neighboring Star May Shape Planetary Formation And How To Search For Eti On Your Own Home Computer

Welcome! "Alien Life" tracks the latest discoveries and thoughts in the various elements of the famous Drake Equation. Here's today's news:

g ABODES - Astronomers have discovered a clump of planet-forming material around a distant star that looks as if it is being pushed around by another star or planet. The observation is unlike anything seen before and offers a rare look into the early stages of planet formation. See article.

g LIFE - There are many different theories about where the origin of life occurred. These theories range from life beginning in deep sea thermal vents to bacterial life arriving from other places in the universe, among others. Some of these theories are more credible than others, yet all provide an interesting explanation for life's beginnings. See article.

g MESSAGE - Want to help SETI discover alien life? If you haven't already done so, download the free SETI at Home software. Using Internet-connected computers, the program downloads and analyzes radio telescope data on your desktop when it is idle. The program has been so successful in plowing through data that other scientific researchers, especially in medicine, are adopting it to their fields. Click here for the program.

g AFTERMATH - Philosophers and former politicians joined an elite group of scientists whose job it is to work out how to respond to signals from extraterrestrial intelligence. See article.

Organic Gases In Possible Planet Forming Region And Favorite Fallacies About Seti

Organic Gases In Possible Planet Forming Region And Favorite Fallacies About Seti
Welcome! "Alien Life" tracks the latest discoveries and thoughts in the various elements of the famous Drake Equation. You may notice that this and future entries are shorter than usual; career, family and book deal commitments have forced me to cut back some of my projects. Now, here's today's news:

g ABODES - Astronomers have discovered large amounts of organic gases and water vapor in a possible planet-forming region around a distant star. The findings provide a better view of early planet formation and could aid in the search for habitable extrasolar planets. See article.

g MESSAGE - Many common ideas about SETI just aren't true, but that doesn't prevent them from popping up in popular articles, blogs, books, and even movies. Here are three favorite fallacies about SETI. See article.

g AFTERMATH - Scientists such as the SETI Institute's John Billingham and Jill Tarter have taken the lead in planning for the day we might receive a signal from life beyond Earth. Working with diplomats and space lawyers, they have helped develop protocols that guide the activities of SETI scientists who think they may have detected extraterrestrial intelligence. Note: This story is a couple of years old. See article.
